If anyone can shed some light on this I'd greatly appreciate it. I just adopted this Amazon parrot a couple of weeks ago. Already love him to death but he's driving us crazy! He screams for no reason and for long periods of time! There are no other birds in the house. I've tried to figure out why he is doing this. It is at no particular time of day either. The extremely loud squawking and screaming I didn't think was common to Amazons. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I thought that some Amazons were more prone to screaming sessions at certain times of day, such as dawn and dusk, and some can be very loud. Greys are often described as "quiet" because they are being compared to other birds such as amazons, conures, macaws etc. Is there any pattern to it, does he do it when you are in the same room as him?

I'm on midnight shift right now and I never hear him during the day while I'm sleeping. However, as soon as I get up and begin to get the house going he starts. I've stopped what I'm doing and gone over to the cage and he acts like he doesn't want anything to do with me. I'm persistant and continue to devote alot of attention to him. But, when I go in another room he just screams and screams. For about the 1st week he was only doing this around 7pm but now he has graduated to whenever he pleases! Can't for the life of me figure this out.

Do you know whether he did this with his previous owner, or is this totally new behaviour? How much sleep does he get? Maybe the change in routine has upset him.

Not to imply that your neglecting him, but our birds are very loud until you give them fresh water or food. Even 15 minutes after a water change one dips something and now wants fresh, they all chime in. You just have to find what sets him off.

I change his water and food regularly and that's the strange part. I cannot figure out what he is trying to tell me. He has not been as vocal today as yesterday. Maybe he was just having a bad day!
Hopefully he's just adjusting to his new environment.
Please keep the helpful comments coming!

Just a thought, but it may just be him being grumpy at being switched to a night cycle. You have to remember that most birds are very *firmly* daytime animals... they can adjust, but it does take *adjustment*.

He's covered in his cage during the day? If that's true it's no wonder he's going bonkers.

Your Amazon should get no less the 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep in a covered cage in a dark room. If you are moving about the house when he should be sleeping this will disrupt his sleep and make him cranky.
What kind of Amazon is he??
I have a Yellow Naped, he will call for me when I am not in his sight. I call back with hello and we make a game of it. I don't have to stop what I am doing to interact with him. Once he knows that I am near he will relax and stop calling for me. When I leave I tell them all good bye and they don't call for me when I am gone.
You can try to replace his squawks with something like hello, if you run to the cage when he squawks you are only reinforcing this behaviour. Try using a contact call with him to let him know you are near.
Hope this helps, John

My New White Front Amazon screams in the morning when I first come down stairs. Also, when I get home from work because he knows he is getting out, fresh food and water. he will do it again at dusk...
It might be that he is not screaming a lot but there scream is piercing compared to AG...
If he is covered during the day that is what the problem is.... He has his days and nights mixed up plus with you giving attention to it when he does it, he will do it more often.....
Rosalie takes care of that for my by saying be quiet stop screaming.... ;D
MBS strike again , I now have 8 birds counting the 2 parakeets I just picked up Monday.... Some lady I work with neighbor was going to put them outside with a sign that said FREE.... Keep in my it is in the 60's here right now.....

Thanks for all the great advice guys! He gets covered at night around 8pm. Then when I get home in the a.m. around 7 he is uncovered. I do not get him out of the cage until I get up around 3pm.
His screaming has subsided some. Maybe he is just getting used to us. He loves to be held and doesn't nip me near as much.
He is an orange winged Amazon! Keep all the advice coming! ;D

My Grey did the same thing when i brought him home! Within the first two weeks his squawking seemed to just get worse. I couldn't figure out for the life of me why he was doing it. He would even do it when i picked him up and was holding him. I was doing everything and i mean everything right! He didn't have a set time of making all this racket, he just squawked to squawk!! Finally i said thats enough and I'm setting rules lol, "No more Squawking" Each time he squawked i went and picked him up saying a firm "NO" and i put him in time out for 10 minutes. I set up a table perch in a spare bedroom on a dresser with no mirror. I was amazed at how fast this worked, within 2 days he stopped! He never squawks anymore, you wouldn't even know i have a bird in my house until he starts to whistle or tries to talk lol!
