Hello.... I just wanted to drop by and ask you a quick question. I did not know where else to go. What better place than with people I trust.... I am concerned about my parakeet Jimmie Jazz... I am not sure any of you have parakeets... I think Preston has two... I know most of my birds are molting now but Rosalie and the rest of the gang do not molt much compared to my parakeet.... Jimmie Jazz was given to me because a friend of mine found him outside about a year or more ago.... He has never really molted that much but this year it is horrible.... I have been watching him for a week or more thinking something is wrong with him perhaps he is picking bald spots because every night I come home from work there are his tiny feathers every where.... I take him out daily and last night I had him out and was looking at him closely for signs of picking, lice (read to much on internet) and I am thinking something is seriously wrong with my little buddy.... Well this little guy has feathers covered with sheath (Forgot the word) every where especially on his head which is mostly all pin feathers (no coffee word is not coming to me). Is this normal for a parakeet? Any advice? I spray my birds at least every other day with water.... Should I had aloe or something to it?

When you say parakeet do you mean Budgie - if so I have 9 of them and they all seem to moult constantly especially 1 who seems to shed as many feathers a day than she has on her body hehe. Do you have a picture?

Yes, They are constantly losing feathers, and the pin feathers are a good sign of regeneration. I vote: Normal! BTW, the words you used were correct.

O.K. Preston and Boomberry.... These Budgie are going to give me a heart attack..... I just got two of them a couple months ago... Debbie and Eddie. Well last night I go home and Eddie feathers are all ruffled and he is acting wierd like he is ill. He is still perching but just does not seem right I go into a panic mode.... Pick him up... That is the first sign something is wrong because he was never allowed me to be picked up.... He is in the food dish eating like he has never ate before picking out just the seeds. P.S. by the time I get home from work after feeding them this morning he has all the food out of the dish and on the floor... I am sitting there on the internet Eddie in hand looking to see what to do and what is the matter with him. He is all cuddled in my lap, no discharge out the nose, breathing right, but looking like he is trying to get warm. I move Deb and Ed's cage thinking they are in a draft, put a heating pad under the cage.... Change his food because I am trying to wean them off of all seed... I had them down to 1/4 seed and one quarter zupreem after two months. So, I go back to half. Cover them up with the heating pad still underneath. I just knew this morning when I uncovered them Eddie would be at the bottom... Well this morning I take the cover off and he is running around like nothing is the matter and not the least bit fluffed or having or sick eyes.... Any suggestions? I am thinking he was trying to tell me hey you changed my food. I will show you by scaring you to death and make you cry thinking something is the matter with me....

Don't get too far away from seeds with Keets, I'd rather see you get a nice mix of grasses, oats and groats, and smaller seeds than pellets. My aunt found an American Parakeet (same as mine) on her back fence 15 years ago so she can't be sure of it's age. If you go to pet 'him' he'll say clearly: "Don't touch the bird". She has raised him on nothing but Hartz Mtn. Bonanza, and that's what I feed mine. Hartz has Keets down pretty good in the nutrition department because they have been focused on them for a hundred years or so. On the subject of cold: What tempretures are you talking about? Try not to use artifical heat because they will adjust to it and get cold when it is off. I've noticed them puffing up at about 74 degrees, and comfortable from 76 and up. You can get an atomic alarm clock with all the bells and whistles including inside and outside temps. I have one and you can place it in a target area to get the tempreture. They are cheap: Radio Shack.

I love when you do pictures and show me exactly what you mean... ;D My thermostat is set at 71 all the time but the bird room has baseboard heat which I can also turn on... It is about 74/75 in that room. I will have both by the end of the day.... I know it was a food protest....

Looks like I nailed the tempreture, and that's why they seem cold when you take the heated cover away, you may want 1 or 2 more degrees; just use a dark cover for shadows and drafts. That clock I showed turned out to be a wall mount, but they have real small ones that do the same thing. Illustration is the best way to validate your explaination of a subject. It used to be in the form of a hand-out, remember, take one and pass it back. ;D
