I don't really know what to think about a situation I saw yesterday. I responded to an ad yesterday about a blue and gold macaw for $700 w/ cage. The owner told me that he has been offered up to $1000 for the bird, but if he doesn't think that it is going to a good home, he won't (and didn't) sell it. He sounded concerned right? He also said that he knows he is not giving it the care it deserves.
Me and my husband saw it yesterday. The bottom of the cage had over an inch layer of poop and food which over flowed the catch tray and was all over the carpet too. The was a large bag of Fiesta on top of the cage that the bird was just eating directly out of. The bird itself was plucked. He had no flight feathers or tail. The owner claimed that the bird "loved" him, but the bird was visibly afraid whenever the owner approached him. When I asked about the noise, the owner said he would show me how loud the bird is and then began poking at the bird, who was trying to get away and did in fact scream during the process. The owner told me that he is the only one who disciplines the bird which involves giving the bird a "good smack when he needs it." After saying this, the guy motioned what he meant swinging his arm hard enough that it would easily knock the bird across the room.
He said he would give me the bird and cage for $600 because he thought that I seemed like a nice owner. I feel very sorry for that poor B&G. Even after all he had been through, the bird still came onto my arm, cautiously though. I want to buy him just to get him out of that situation, but sometimes getting another bird is just wishful thinking because we are in an apartment and I don't want to take my chances with the noise. I don't know what to do about it.
