Monday morning at about 4:00, our parakeet, Simeon went nuts in his cage. Afterwards, he just kept making this odd chirping noise and scratching the top of his head. I had never seen or heard of this before. He had been fine and never had night frights up to this point. He died just before 8:00am. He never stopped the chirping for the 4 hours of his suffering . There was nothing we could do. We sat with him, but it didn't help. I took him in for a necropsy and the vet could only find one thing obviously wrong. His adrenal glands were enlarged whereas usually you can't really see them. His testicles were enlarged also, but she said this was due to his need to mate. He had just a few stress bars on some wing feathers and that was it. Everything else looked normal. We are keeping a close eye on his cagemate and the other birds, but they all seem unaffected. His cagemate is calling for him, but otherwise seems healthy. After we uncovered him that morning, my husband found a spider on the cage cover. After discussing this with the vet, we are pretty sure that he got bit by the spider. So watch out for the spiders!! The bugs have been extremely bad here in Kansas City this year. The vet said it is unusual for them to get bit but she has seen it before this case. We will miss our baby very much. He was only 3-4 years old. Karen
