I was wondering what people recommend on how to build an aviary.
When we bred cockatiels, we built a large aviary outside for them. It was about 15' by 5' and 8' tall. It was made with chicken wire and spare wood, but it seemed to work fine. We never had any injuries or deaths over many years. It was in L.A. where it never gets too hot or cold. When it rained we covered the top of it. Unfortunately a plane that was spraying pesticides accidently dropped the chemical over our town. Our dog was still alive the next day, but sadly every single bird (about 20) was laying dead on the ground of the aviary. We had the breeding pair inside and a few others, but we were all too heart broken to ever raise them anymore. We just sold the last few babies and removed the breeding box and kept the pair.
I have gotten off topic. I don't think chicken wire would still be recommended but I am not sure. I have an apartment, with a patio. The aviary wouldn't be a permanent home, just for nice days when I like to be outside for hours at a time. Manzi likes to watch the outside elements from inside, but outside on his leash he is always on guard. Maybe if he had an aviary to be inside he would feel more protected. Any ideas?

Do you know the name of that kind of wire? I was wondering if I can put some kind of protective coating over the wood to protect it from the elements, but would that make it dangerous for birds?
I guess to prevent that I can make sure the the wire is covering the inside of all the pieces of wood so Manzi wouldn't have any access.

If it's within your budget you could use cedar and it will last years, but yes, afixing the wire on the inside will reduce Grey damage. They sell that wire at Home Depot. I would also use fence staples that you hammer in instead of staple gun ones because the bird will get the smaller ones out as you well know.

Do you think that with the coming bird flu it might not be a good idea to have a daytime outside aviary?

Something else you also want to consider is zinc! Anything that you get that says, "Galvanized" is zinc coated. I recently had to give Scarlet injections and oral medication for weeks due to zinc toxicosis. I have not found any suitable wire mesh at Home Depot or Lowe's that is not zinc. I have found a couple of places online that carry stainless steel mesh. The only problem is, it is a bit more expensive. I am still hoping to be able to build an aviary soon...but with the Arizona summer beating down, I will have to wait to put them out there anyway...so eventually I will. But it WILL be out of stainless steel and not galvanized.
