A guy at work has had a female cockatiel for 5 years (she is 6). They also have to mini-dachshunds (1 and 2 years old). The dogs have not bothered the bird at all til recently. Now the younger dog is starting to try to go after the bird. My co-worker is concerned that the dog will hurt/kill the bird. He doesn't really want to get rid of the bird, but is not sure what other options are. Any help would be great.

It is not easy I have baby gates in the house so when the birds are out of their perch the dogs are in the bedroom or in the Florida room. We put a leash on the one dog that hates the birds and my roommate hold him while I play with my birds on the chair. In some ways that has been good because at least my dog is getting use to the birds being out. You can buy extra wide gate too at walmart I have one of those too. Good luck it is not easy.

Thank you for your replies...I will pass this on to my co-worker. I hope they don't end up having to give the bird away. Why is it always the bird that has to go?! They live longer than dogs and this particular bird has "seniority" in this house. I just don't get it!!!!

Okay, Frankie is an exception!!! That is too cute!!! I always end up with really stupid dogs, maybe I'm just not a dog person.
