Hi Everyone!! I finally picked my bird up from the store yesterday! I named he/she Skye. I think that is a unisex name. So far, so good. She's getting used to the new home, probably missing her sister; I'm sure. She's just been preening a lot and checking out her new cage. I have to go and get her some toys and stuff today. We're working on the "step-up" command, she's catching on pretty quick! my Cockatiel isn't impressed with her at all! Infact, I think he's mad at me for bringing in another bird! He's a cute little one anyways!!

I like the name . We have discussed changing Nikko's name to something more girlie, and two of the names in the running are Skyler and Izzy. Don't know if I'll actually go through with it though.

That's something I've wondered about. Has anyone changed their bird's name? When we got Shadow, I decided not to change her name because she knows it and says it. I thought it might be too "traumatic." Any thoughts?

Even though my grey turned out to be a boy, I've tought about changing his name. Scooter is such a common name.....Not only that but not sophisicated enough for a grey. But, were so used to calling him Scooter so it would br hard to change now.

I thought it might be too "traumatic." Any thoughts? In your case, I think it would be okay to change it since Shadow is so young, and since you haven't been used to calling her Shadow for that long. In my case, I think it might be kind of hard to get used to calling Nikko a new name. We've had a difficult enough time with getting used to calling her a girl instead of a boy. I better decide soon whether or not to change it though, because the more time that passes, the more difficult it will be. I had a conure who was known as Daffy for the first six months of his life, and then when I bought him, I called him Bird for another six months (couldn't decide on a name). After that I called him Jesse, and some people called him J.J. (his middle name was James). Then after 10 years, he got a new family. They already had a son named Jesse, so they may have renamed him again. Poor guy probably has/had identity issues.

IMHO, Why change their name, they have no clue. If I found out Pete was a female I would not change a thing. Actually, the only sex I know with my nine is my breeding pair of cockateils and Andi is DNA typed.

When we got Justice, we thought he was 6 months old and had always lived at the breeders. When I talked to the shop OWNER about a week after we bought him, I found out he was about 9 months old, had been sold to another family for about 2 months and then brought back. I guess the wife didn't like the husband spending so much time with the baby...so he was forced to bring this sweet boy back (their loss, our gain). We also hadn't been told that he had been named...of all things..."Harley". We had already started to call him Justice, and Harley is such a common name...boring. So we continued with Justice and ignored the other name. Fortunately for us, he did not speak yet...so the only name he knows is Justice:)

6 of my birds are adopted and I changed the name of 3 of them. My caiques were named Chip and Dale and it made me think of the dancers so I had to change their names. Lucky was named Cujo after the dog in the movie. I was told he was very mean and bit any one who got near him but he is a sweat heart.
Rosy, Sam and Buster were all named when I got them. Sam says his name and he is 12 years old so I didn't want to change it.
Congo I got as a baby and I named him.

I kept all 5 of mine the same when adopting them... I did change Rosalie Rosebud when I got her because she was DNA sexed as a female. The other 4 I just added a middle name that sorta rhymed with their first name... I do not speak to her using the name Rosalie Rosebud. She is Bud when talking to her....
