OK, this is strange and i'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this...... there appears to be blood on my love birds rope swing in several places. she shows NO sign of injury anywhere. she appears very healthy/normal/happy.
perhaps she has been trying to mate with her swing (i don't even know if birds do this). she's been hanging from it in a semi-upside down position and appears to be thrusting her lower body against it for durations of time while holding in one place on the swing. but even if she were trying to mate with the swing, why would there be reddish/brownish marks??? maybe she just lost a blood feather, but i didn't see any larger feathers in or around the cage. If anyone has experienced this before please fill me in. thanks!

I have heard of cockatiels doing this with toys. You should discourage any mating behavior. Rearrange the cage and take the swing out if you have to.

Without seeing a source of blood it's hard to say. Birds will regurgitate for their favorite toy also so this could be what you are seeing as well.

I just read an article the other day that said you should watch cotton rope swings. Check them once in a while for loose threads or places where their nails can get snagged. I was shocked to read this as my tiel loves his rope swing and I just bought him a rope boing. I would'nt think to take these out of his cage as that's the only thing that interests him. Could your bird have caught his nails ?

I would say if the bird tries to mate with the swing there would be feathers missing from the vent area. The feathers do not have to be the big ones to have a blood supply. Nancy has a goos point on a nail being caught and some blood from the cuticle could have caused this. Just keep an extra eye on the bird to see what's involved in this new habbit. You could take a piece of PVC pipe and cut in in 1/2 inch pieces and slide it over the rope so that it maintains it's flexibility, but they can't get at the rope. keep us informed of the new subject.

thanks everyone for your replies. she has continued the behavior so i did remove the swing. i hate to take it from her since she enjoys it so much (even before her odd actions). i plucked her off the swing in the middle of her motions and the down feathers around the vent were exposed making me think she had possibly lost some of the external feathers in that region. however, the next morning (after havig removed the swing) i flipped her over again to check and everything looks normal. all her nails seem to be intact so i'm thinking she must have been regurgitating for the swing. i'm going to attempt to give her the swing back in a few weeks. again, thanks for all the replies.
