Hi guys, here's an irritating little story for ya!
A friend of mine approached me about a month and a half ago about her bird, a little quaker parakeet that was hers, but she said was sitting at her parent's house unloved. She wondered if, since we are bird people, we would take it and give it a good home. We agreed, and we went to go meet the bird.
The poor thing was in her cage, in a small room all by herself. The only other thing in the room was a dresser and a window (which was covered with curtains so the poor thing couldn't even see outside). Come to find out that this poor little bird has been locked away in this room with hardly any human contact for nearly ten years! Now I'm not sure how long Quaker's live, but that's nearly a lifetime for some birds!
So we brought her home with us, being loving people, knowing that she was going to be a challenge for us to care for. We named her Molly.
Molly is a little wench! She bites and she bites hard. She never lets us take her out of her cage, and if we get close enough for her to, she bites at us through the bars. We have given her affection and we finally got her to the point where she will at least talk to us, but I want more than anything for her to feel un-neglected. She won't even let us touch her without trying to take off a finger or our entire hand. She even tries to get at us when we take her dishes out to re-fill them!
So what I'm asking for is advice. Have any of you ever had a bird in this situation before and if so, how did you handle it? Will we ever be able to get Molly to sit on our hands, or is she just a lost cause?
