I was wanting to buy either a grey or a macaw, but I wanted to get some more info on macaws right now. What kind of macaws do you guys have? Does your macaw talk? Does your macaw mimic noises? Are they friendly? I know they are very loud, but is it so loud you go DEAF!? Thanks!

I don't know a lot about macaws, but it's recommended that only experienced bird people get them. They require quite a time commitment.
Are you thinking about getting a mini-macaw, or a large one?

I agree with Spokyhurst, Macaws are not for everyone. They do talk some but they don't mimic noises. They require about 4 hours a day of handling. I would only reccomend a Macaw to an experianced bird peoson.

'Toos... Oh My God.
I take Dusty down to two different pet shops regularly so he can socialize with other birds (half for sale, half boarders) and get used to seeing strangers. He's made a tremendous improvement in his preening today from just an hour of watching everybody else, a Blue & Gold in particular.
However, I was sitting right next to a Moluccan's cage that was being borded. She would hang upsidedown, then scale her cage wall upsidedown faster than any lizard straight to the bottom. She'd then proceed to do about 15 laps around the bottom of the cage making various screaching patterns (half smoke alarm, the other half fire truck I think) until she decided to shimmy back up to the top and start all over.
My ears hurt. o_รต

Also think of: the size of the bird, the more the mess. They are beautiful though.

They sure are. If I had it in me to take care of a macaw, I'd probably go with the blue and gold. But some of the hybrids sure are spectacular looking.

we have a severe macaw, it is the largest of the mini macaws. he is a one person bird and we are thinking of selling him because of it. he hates me with a passion. if i walk into the room while my hubby is holding him he visciously bites my hubby and wont let go till i leave. my hubby is disabled and has many medical problems that land him in the hospital quite often. i have to put a board between the bars of the cage to get at his dishes to feed him and he doesnt get to come out until my hubby gets home. other than that he isnt too loud, he talks and sings loves to wrestle and play hide and seek under a towel or blanket.

Hello Guys, Long time no post.... My Fiance and I had a Severe Macaw. He was very much a one person bird. I was chosen to be the favorite with him... His talking ability was not as good as the Zane our grey but his ability to mimic noises was good. He did require more attention than our Cag. But, with our Severe when he left with both the Severe and Cag. We were both were having separation anxiety and I had to go visit the Severe for several months because she was a wreck when he took him and the Grey and left me the two conures. I would own another one in a minute...

I don't know anything about them as I never thought about getting one (too large). Wild guess! If the feathers are brittle there may be a problem with dryness. Does she spritz the bird with a aloe and water mix or commercial product like Bath Time from Canopy Sceintific? If yes, then have the vet do blood for calcium.

DISCLOSURE My opinion is not going to be popular. In the wild these birds would not breed between the species. As beautiful as I think those hybrids are, it is wrong. I personally view the owning of an exotic animal (including birds) as a privilege and as a way to preserve the species. Hybridizing is not preserving a species. Hybridizing increases the odds of genetic abnormalities, compromises immune systems and reduces the gene pool for purebreds. I feel the same way about th Id10ts out there that are crossbreeding the toy breeds of dogs. Anything for the almighty buck. I'm off my soapbox now.
