Bird crazy that is!! I have been wanting a amazon for some time now. There was one at the pet store that was 9 years old but it hated men. Today I went to the pet store and they had a Yellow-Nape Amazon that the owner had brought in to sell. His owner had him for 3 years, he bought it for his wife and it has never liked her, the bird chased her across the room so they decided to sell it. They really did not want to sell it and they will miss it alot. His name is Sam and he is 12 years old. I was told he has a large vocabulary but I have not heard him talk yet, only had him for an hour. He came with his cage and all accessories. He is on a pellet diet. He settled in well here and has already begun grinding his beak. I think he knows this will be his forever home. This is the last bird for me, I will still help with re-homing others to good homes but I don't want any more. John members.cox.net/jamaiorana/IMG_2242.JPG

It's adopt a parrot month? Cool . It's a good thing the bird rescue I got Nikko from is 3 hours away. I got the latest list of birds, and they have a gorgeous blue and gold macaw and a sweet little canary, among others. If I lived closer, I probably would have caved and adopted the canary. Congrats on your new Amazon!

Thank you all. He is a great bird but he is stinky. I noticed on the way home that he smells. He has a small water dish so I know he isn't taking a bath in it. I sprayed some Canopy bath spray on him when I got him home. I don't want to give him a shower too soon after just bringing him home, I want him to get adjusted well first. Does anyone else have a stinky bird? Will a bath help? John

Spritz him down real good now, he is having to adjust to a new home, and might as well adjust to a bath. It will be second nature when he is comfortable in his new home.

I think some Amazons do have a distinctive smell as do Macaws. Greys don't so maybe you are just noticing it more.

Thanks Jane and Preston. I will spray him again tomorrow morning. He still growls some when I reach in his cage to pick him up but he doesn't bite. I took him out and put him on top of his cage and he just climbed back inside. I am not sure if he was allowed out of his cage before but I do know that is previous owner worked at home and was home with him all day. I will give him plenty of time to settle in, I can't wait to hear him talk.

Sam started talking today ... not very clear tho. He repeated what sounded like names over and over for about 15 minutes and he sounded distressed. I think maybe he misses his old owners a bit. Otherwise he seems happy and healthy. I felt sad for him, he sounded like a child who couldn't find his mommy. I am sure he will be fine in no time. I am reading " The Second Hand Parrot " it has a lot of good information. I would recommend everyone read it even if you don't have a re-homed parrot.

He'll be OK because he's in a good home. The book sounds like a good read, thanks for the tip.

Sam spoke this morning, he said " hi birdie " when I uncovered his cage, he was mumbling also. He did the same calling this evening for about an hour. I try not to encourage this behavior so maybe he will stop. I took him to the end of the hallway in my house and closed all the doors and put him on the floor. I then sat in the living room and let him walk around. I figured he would use up some energy walking and it did quiet him down. He walked down the hall and into the living room. He went to my brother first the came over and climbed up my leg. He always climbs up my arm to get on my shoulder but I wont let him on get on my shoulder. I bought some new toys and a swing for him and I am in the process of introducing them to him. He only had 1 toy in his cage and there are no chew marks on it, he has chewed on 1 of his perches. I introduced 1 new toy to him by playing " keep away ". I let him see me play with the toy then offered it to him, he moved away when I got near, so I would pull it back as to keep it away from him. I played with it some more and ignored him not making eye contact. I offered it to him several times each time taking it away before he could get to it. Then I finally let him have it. It only took a few hours for 1 toy rather that a week like with a Grey. Tomorrow I will try the other toy then the swing.

Yes, they are very different. I once read this description somewhere: African Greys are the "intellectual college graduates" and Amazons are the "street smart and life-of-the-party type of guys".

I read that about them also Jane. Sam is not social at all. He will step up good but is some times a big bully. He bit me hard once but didn't draw blood. I let him know I am bigger than he is and I don't let him get his way. He ran from the new toy when I got near him and he will hang upside down to get away when trying to scratch his head. He also doesn't eat veggies. He just needs positive reinforcement and I am sure he will be fine.
