A lady I know was bird sitting a conure and the owner abandoned it. The bird was left with her after hurricane Katrina and she never heard from them again. Its a Red-Masked Conure, the bird was stressed after loosing a flock mate and became a plucker. He is the worst plucker I have ever seen. He was plucked when he arrived at the sitters house and has since grown back some feathers but not many. I found him a good home and dropped him off tonight. I will make sure he is taken care of in his new home. I told his new owner if he wasn't able to keep him for any reason I would take him back. So many people lost their homes and are unable to keep pets where they are staying now. The bird shop is still boarding many birds left there since the hurricane. One Macaw at the bird shop in thought to be abandoned, they haven't heard from the owner since he left the bird. There are still many birds left in foster care all over the area. Some people have only their pets left after loosing everything to the storm.

I just spoke with Brian, the new owner of the conure, and he said the bird is adjusting well. He is able to hold him and he is very friendly. Brian was on his way to get a new cage and other supplies for him. The cage he is in was too small and only had 1 toy. I will keep yall posted on how the conure does in his new home. John

God One John, I'm gald you kept the quality high on the shot, I zoomed in and not being an expert, but that dammage looks perminant. That is also the worse I have seen. Just remember to tell him that a lot of body heat is being lost so pay close attention to his environment. The new owner is also a hero for excepting the task, none but the most caring would do it. Keep up the good rescue work. I know you'r not doing it for monitary reasons, but your expenses should qualify for and exempt rescue, and deductable on your FICA. I think it is A501(c) I'll find it for you.

Thank you for your kind words and for the tax info. I am thinking of helping another one, its an Amazon. I have not seen the Amazon yet but it is also a plucker and wearing a collar. I am not sure I want to take on the task of rehab for another plucker and I don't know anyone else willing to either. I was told its also very mean but then I was told the Conure was mean also. I don't know how I got in the middle of so many birds that need help. The Conure is growing tail feathers but I am not sure about the rest of them. Its skin is very dry. Brian is going to try to get an appointment with the vet as soon as he can which may be several weeks. I will keep y'all posted of his progress.

I went over to Brian's house to visit Buster. He is very happy in his new home, he is growing tail feathers and he is starting to get some down on his body. Brian is very happy to have him and Buster loves Brian.

I would imagine it is hard to place a "defective" bird, but it's hard not to love them either. Keep pushing Bro. What goes around comes around, and your in the seat for something good! I whish I were closer to work with you.

Thank you Preston. The reward of seeing that bird happy and regrowing its feathers is worth the time and effort. Brian will be more attached and proud of him then is he was fully feathered now. I have stumbled upon something I like and that is very rewarding, I will take it as far as I can go.

Great job on all your rescues!
Is there a bird rescue in your area? If so, you could look into volunteering for them. The rescue I adopted Nikko from has people foster birds for them. It's the foster parents responsibility to supply the food/toys and whatnot, but the rescue takes care of the vet care and cage.
Also, maybe Brian could try spraying Buster's skin with aloe vera spray. That might help with the dryness.

Thank you SH, since hurricane Katrina I haven't been able to find a bird rescue in my area. I may volunteer at my local Zoo after my surgery, they have a large aviary. Brian is using Canopy bath spray daily for Buster and he is doing good with that.

I also wish I lived closer to you I would love to assist you in this. You should be commended.... There are not to many Bird Rescue's close to me really there is only one with the exception of two Humane Society which do not get to many rescues of birds. Although all 4 of mine are adopted I heard about them through family and friends....

If anyone in the Phoenix area would like to help out with rescue birds, I just heard of this place called Fallen Feathers. I'm going to look into it myself: www.fallenfeathers.org/index.html
