Hi all:
All the posting about huricane Katrina made me think to post a saftey note for your fids at home in case of a fire.
Most (all?) fire departments and spca locations have stickers for your windows that indicate that there are pets in your suite/home. Firemen are trained to do a window search first to assess the situation and locate any living beings inside. A house is one thing but for all of you out there that live in condo's or apartments, this is your best bet to get your birds out safely if you are not home.
So, we have placed the stickers in all of the windows (upper corner ensuring visibility from the ground). Front door too.
BUT while I was placing them I had a thought. We parrot lovers understand how precious and "worthy" these creatures are but not everyone else does. I sat back and thought like a regular joe-blo fireman and I came to this conclusion...
Dogs first
Cats second
Birds, hamsters, gerbils, chinchilla's...if there's time.
SO...I now have dog stickers in all of my windows! I figure, chances are better that they would think to get a dog out before a bird.
In the event of a fire in my building (heaven forbid, knock on wood, salt over the shoulder) the firemen will now come across a freaked out BoBo with a sign above the cage that says...
"Hello, my name is DOG...take me with you."
I have also set up an emergency pack beside his cage with his travel cage, a towel, small pack of fresh pellets, a bottle of water and a blanket. Included in the pack is point form quick tips on how to towel BoBo safely in an emergency (any emergency).
