A friend of mine just offered to give me a goffin cockatoo with cage and everything for $200 because he just got a job out west and has to move. I want to take it because it is such a love bug and loves me to hold it and pet and cuddles with me. He says its not a screamer. Thinks its a female but could be male. Says a few words. I don't know what if i should take he said if i don't it's going to a shelter. I want to but i don't want it to be loud in my home. It's 3yrs old... Ahhhh... I think i can handle it but i don't want it to become a screamer or plucker. Need advice fast... Thanks

;)If you are genuinely interested in the Goffins then I say "go for it"...but if you do, you are going to have to be really, really proactive in keeping this one from becoming a picker or screamer. The Goffins that I have known are all a little "wacko" but they also came from some pretty sketchy situations. Might I suggest... If this bird is headed to a shelter if you don't take her, maybe you could take it in and consider yourself the "foster parent" as a bit of a trial. She would go to a foster home if placed in the shelter anyway until a permanent adopter would be found...this way you could see if she is going to work with you. Maybe propose this to your friend to defer the $200 until you are sure...he wouldn't be getting $200 if he surrendered her to the shelter anyway. I am a HUGE (sorry preston ) advocate for the rescue and adoption of adult parrots and ideally I would like to see any bird placed in a new home STAY (sorry again ;D) in that home. However, we can't always do what is "right" so doing the "best we can do" for parrots out there is better than nothing. I would take a rescue bird over a bappy any day...but that is a very personal choice. For me, my rescues have been the most rewarding experiences that I've had. All that being said...a cockatoo takes a wee bit more thought than many other species would.

Jozi pretty much summed it up. I'd take the bird for a trial run because it may just be as he said.

How much time do you have to devote to the bird's needs each day? I've heard cockatoos and macaws need something like 5 hours of interaction a day. If you have the time to devote to her, then I say go for it. Just be sure you would rather have a cockatoo over a conure or grey.
I'm with you jozi. As sweet and cuddly as baby birds look, I'd rather take a rescue bird. It makes me kind of sad that I missed out on Nikko's playful/cuddly baby days, but it also makes feel good to have adopted a bird looking for a second home (although Nikko didn't need the rehab that Bobo did).

Thanks for the cockatoo link. I never really considered buying one, or a MacCaw, too large. I had a friend a long time ago whose parent's had one. I never heard a bird screech so loud. I had the misconception that they were cuddly and were like big cockatiels. The link was a real eye opener. My tiels are all sweet, but my cuddliest bird is our sun conure who we bought as a baby. She shakes her body and wings when I get home, she gets so excited. If she had her way whe would be with me 24/7

FIRST of all, Preston... Actually, that's all I had to say Nope, on second thought... Pitman, you gotta go with your gut instinct on this one. If you feel the twinge of "wrong" then don't do it. When the right bird comes into your life...you will know it!

pitman, i think you made the right decision with the cockatoo. have you ever looked at or considered getting a quaker parrot? they are wonderful and alot of fun and can be very good talkers, they are fairly cheap, they dont have a problem being left alone while your at work like some birds do.
