Seems fun to own a macaw. Sadly I had that opportunity but a birth defect had taken my lovely B&G's life.

Good to hear Traci, can't wait to see pics. I came real close to buying a B&G Macaw a few weeks ago. The bird store had a 1 year old B&G but it was not too friendly. I would go there several times a week and work with him to gain his trust. He finally started getting better and I could hold him without getting bit. The bird store owner said he would sell him to me for $800.00 and give me a $400.00 cage free. I had to think real hard about taking his offer then the next day he was sold. Well I really didn't need another bird. Now there is a Green Wing Macaw at the same bird store, abandoned after Katrina, who is for sale. He is so tame I can hold him on his back and rub his belly. He is $1800.00 plus a cage. I will have to wait before I can afford that.

Traci, that is the most beautiful B&G I have ever seen, I am so jealous.
I was at the bird store again today playing with the green wing, he is so cool.

I wish I had room for a macaw. The local bird rescue has gotten in 5 during the past month (2 blue/golds, 2 scarlets, 1 greenwing). One of the scarlets is only 6 months old. As beautiful as the scarlets are though, I think I'd rather have a b&g. I've read that scarlets tend to be quite neurotic, while b&g's tend to be more even tempered.

Beautiful Bird. Just a bit large for me though. I can't believe that pet shop wants full price for a rescued bird. Not that isn't worth it, but the spirit of rescue is to recover your out of pocket and sell a nice cage. I would check if they had 501(c) pet rescue exemption and nail them!!

Boy, it's only $350 to adopt a macaw at my local rescue, and a lot of times, it includes the cage.

If there was a rescue near me I would have a house full of birds at that price. I paid a premium price for Sam second hand. Lucky and Rosy were both free tho. I should have gotten a break with Congo because of his feet but I wouldn't trade him for anything.

TARA's fees are very reasonable. You pay $45 for the mandatory parrot care class, and the adoption fees are:
Adoption fees for TARA birds are as follows:
Budgies: $25
Feathered Friends for the Elderly/Disabled Program: one-time charge of $35
Lovebirds and Cockatiels: $65
Ringnecks, Conures, Quakers: $145
Poicephalus, Pionus, Alexandrines, and Lories: $220
Amazons, Greys, Eclectus, Mini-Macaws: $300
Macaws and Cockatoos: $350
Anything the bird came to the clinic with is included as well. I didn't take Nikko's cage though, since I had already purchased one.
