I gotta confess that I am getting very jealous of all of you.
I keep checking my email and my answer machine in hopes that the breeder has called to tell me her Timnehs have laid eggs. She has 2 pair so sooner or later--------
This past Sunday, I went to a parrot rescue and took the first of three classes that you have to take before they let you adopt. There was a real pretty Congo there. Her name was Maggie and she was blind in one eye. She was also more of the size of a Timneh, (they think this may be due to all the antibiotics she had to take while battling the eye infection). She is just 2 years old and has quite a large vocabulary. Well, I tried to get my name on the adoption list but they won't even consider you until you take all three "must have" classes. Believe me, talk about getaway cars--I wish I had a driver that day. Sadly the next "must have" course isn't until Jan 15 and the last "must have" course isn't until Feb 18. I know this pretty little girl will be rescued by then. She is just sooo sweet. Oh me oh my
Over the past month or so, I have been reading posts and am still in wonder as to how in the heck Preston held out for so long. I could tell when reading his posts that he was getting the itch. It was really just a matter of time as far as I could tell.
So I guess that I'll just have to keep reading all your stories and concerns and sharing your excitment and enthusiasm and I'll keep checking my emails and my answer machine waiting for my dream to become an egg, and I really hope that I won't turn green from all the envy.

It is hard to wait, but so worth it when you get your baby. Your rescue sounds more strict than mine. I only had to go to class for a day (3 hours on nutrition, followed by 3 hours on behavior), and they have the class once a month. They also "held" Nikko for me until I could take the class (which was about a week after I asked about him). You never know, that sweet CAG could still be there come February. Not everyone will be gung ho over a less than perfect pet . I've seen greys up for adoption at www.petfinder.com that have been there for months. It's hard to believe no one wants these sweeties. I'm still thinking about the CAG I saw at my rescue, and am debating whether I have the time, space, and money to take on 2 greys. He was so wonderful, and it's sad to think of him sitting there day after day, waiting for someone to take him home .

Actually in ways your schedule sounds better than mine. The courses are Parrot Personalities,2 hours--This is the one I took. They went over all the parrots from Budgies to Macaws, describing their various sizes and traits as to talk abilities, behavior, size, noise levels. Basically its so you know what you might be getting into when adopting one species over another. The other courses are Basic Bird Care & Safety 2 hours and Behavior (screaming biting feather plucking) 2 hours, but again the classes are so spaced out--only 1 a month, so it takes 3 months to just get through the courses!!! Its really kindof shocking that they drag out the process when they have so many birds to adopt out. Actually I would've preferred your schedule and learned more about behavior and nutrition as I had already done my homework on species myself. Of course there are probably people out there that don't know traits and that's why there are rescue birds. The adoption fee for a grey is $ 150.00 plus a minimum of $ 175.00 for the vet fees. Also, as I don't live near PEAC headquarters, I read in their handout that I will have to pay the expense of having someone come out to look at my house. Of course maybe they wouldn't charge me, but I live about 50 minutes away taking the highway and going 60-65 mph. As to sweet sweet Maggie still being there--well they gave me their "fall" newsletter and both Congos, (one 10 and one 9 yrs old), were adopted out within a month of that expo. Maggie is sooo sweet someone will pick her up in a heartbeat I think, even with the blind eye. The only thing you had to be careful of is to approach her on her "good eye side" so you didn't scare her.
I can understand your dilemma totally. When you first wrote about the CAG, I could almost read between the lines that you were thinkin about him/her. Our PEAC won't adopt a bird out to a house that has purchased/adopted a pet within the last 18 months so in Cleveland it isn't even possible to adopt 2 birds so quickly. The rescue sells used cages for pretty cheap but even so, when you look at the cost of toys to keep them challenged and the vet fees, (once a year checkup and hopefully no emergencies), I have a feeling it could get very costly very quickly. Besides, I don't think that I have the time to share between 2 greys ?? As much as I would love to have Maggie and still get my TAG, I would feel guilty as all getout that perhaps I spent more time with one than the other. Even now I get those feelings between my dog and tiel. Thankfully the cat is seldom even in the house and she's quite Miss Independent otherwise it'd be worse !! I think I need to win the lottery and that would solve the problem totally. The megamillions is really gettin up there.
Anyhow I bought this recipe book for a couple of dollars there and hopefully in the next few days I can type some of the recipes into my puter and post them. I am hoping I can cut and paste to this site--

I was sitting out the waiting period for a divorce so custody could be decided. I just fell in love with this cutie and how she took to me. I had reservations of replaceing Pete as I thought I would feel guilty. I just pulled into that bird shop for some reason and the rest is history. You can cut and paste to the forum by the way, but please mind the laws for printed material that is not listed as public domaim. Pro Boards will pull the forum for copyright violations before the publisher even has a chance to complain. You can't miss an opportunity and I'm sure he will love you forever giving him a home ! Go on, go for it.

Thanks Preston, I thought of that copyright stuff seconds after I signed off the internet. Anyhow, the name of the book is "The Avian Gourmet-- Guide For A Healthier Parrot" It's publised by PEAC (Parrot Education & Adoption Center) It only cost $ 2.00 and there are recipes from www.Hornbeamaviary.com--Sally Blanchard--Pamela Clark --the fax number for PEAC is 1-440-349-0422 and theri email address is parrotadopt@yahoo.com. As it's a small paper book 12 pages long and only 5" x 11". I am sure that it wouldn't cost much to mail and the money goes to parrot rescue.
