We have a pair of lovebirds that have been laying eggs. Several months ago they layed one or two eggs in the bottom of the cage and wanted nothing to do with them so we threw them away. Now they layed one a few days ago and the same thing happened. Well, now last night they layed one and seem to want to sit on it. It makes me feel bad to take it out of the cage. Is it okay to do this? We have lots of birds already and don't need baby lovebirds! Even though I would love for them to breed, we just don't have the time to raise them the way we would want to. Any advice? Thanks!

hi its a natural behaviour female may lay eggs even if male is not available and if you have not provided them box may be the eggs are not fertile. if you dont want them to breed just through the eggs these small birds forget very soon. i have one peach face love bird pair and they have three chicks now which are about to come out of box and if you happen to see these cute chicks of love bird you would love to have your pair breed haani

Since they seem to be more interested in this one it could be as Haani says about fertility. you can hold the egg to a light and see veins in a fertil egg. The my just raise it themselves like our cockatiels did. you could give the chick away when weened. If you want to stop breeding you'll need to take away anything in the cage to make a nest out of. This stopped our pair after 8 self raised and parent weened chicks. We gave them (all but 2) of the chicks to proven good homes, but decided to stop then as to not burn out our female since we never intended to breed them in the first place.

Thank you both for your replies. I think we're just going to have to toss the eggs for now. I know that we would want to hand raise them and we just don't have the time for that right now.

We have this problem with our lovebirds. Our vet told us that it's actually not good for them to lay keep laying eggs like this and we should "discourage" the behavior (stop giving them newspaper to shred, etc).
Of course, we have two situations - one lovebird who's all by herself in her cage, so obviously, she's laying unfertilized eggs. The others, though, are a male and female, but the eggs are always "duds". You can try to candling test as mentioned above to make sure before you throw them out. Eventually, they do realize they aren't going to hatch and they'll abandon the eggs which is a good chance to toss them.

If your birds continue to lay and sit on eggs, the process will eventually weaken the hen and will make her susceptible to diseases because she eats less while sitting and also loses calcium.

May I also ask what is the length of their lighting and what you are feeding them?
