I was given an Amazon as a present three years ago this November. The Amazon, Sonny, had a bit of a rough life before he came to me.
When he started out, he was bought with his mate and kept in a small cage on the floor of an attic room with a guy who constantly forgot to feed them, water them, etc.
After a whlie, these birds were given to my ex bf's mum who kept them both in an aviary which they shared with cockateils, ring necked parakeets and quails. Unfortunately about 6-8 months later, the female died and left Sonny on his own (he didn't have a name then) and sat pining constantly after his companion. Faced with what to do with him, the ex bf said he will give Sonny to me.
Sonny has now reverted back to a caged life although this time he is without his companion.
For the past near on 3 years, I have talked to him, whistled to him, hand fed him all in the hope that he will one day become tame. To my delight at the weekend, after he decided to fly up my hallway, I offered him a perch to step up to so I could take him to his cage and low and behold he stepped up. I was a little nervous as he started to walk right up to my hand and I thought he would bite me but he just sat there waiting to be transferred!!
This is just the start of our bonding. He takes food from my hand and is a beautiful bird. He knows his name and when I call him, he replies with a little sqwark noise.
The vet said that he thought he was probably about 7 years old.
I posted this extremely long winded post, really, just to point out that it is never too late to tame a bird or to bond with a parrot. It has taken me nearly 3 years to get Sonny onto a perch which was a truely heartwarming experience. I now know that he has started to trust me and its really really nice to know.
