Has anyone ever heard of a "King" Congo? In a small pet store near my house, there's a baby congo who happens to have red stripes on his body, and a visitor to the store says it's a "King" congo.

Yes, the Greys with red feathers scattered in with the grey are called Red Factors and in the past they were highly prized. They are sometimes called King Congos.

A large number of baby CAG's have the red feathers on their bodies especially around the legs but most of the red will be lost after the first or second molt. Breeders have been trying to develope a red strain by breeding from babies which have the most red feathers and from these pairings, have produced babies with even a higher red feather count, a few with over sixty percent of their body covered with red feathers. The problem is the red feathering is not a permanent one. There are now a number of birds which have retained several red feathers even after several molts and by controlled selective breeding with these there is no doubt that a complete red strain is not too far down the road. Just like the lutino and the turquoise amazons (without any green), the all red CAG with no gray will also cost an arm and a leg.

Trinie had many red feathers on his back, rump, under the wings, between and around the legs but most are being replaced with gray.

Thanks for all the info. I was afraid he would lose the red, but maybe not- we'll see. As soon as I learn how to post a pic, I certainly will!

E-Mail me the pic and I'll host it. Don't shrink it as I will do it. 300 to 500 K is perfect.

Preston, where do you host all the photos of birds people send you? When I look at your site, what I see is Pete, his friends, the ground support, the unforgotten, but nothing else. Am I looking in right place?

It's listed under 'my friends'. To see all the pics that the person has, click on 'more pictures here' which is under the name of the individuals first pic.
