I've read conflicting information about the noise level of Eclectus parrots. Some say they're screamers, others say they're quiet enough for apartment living. Anyone here have experience with this kind of bird? The reason I ask is two-fold: 1. I'm still undecided on what kind of bird I want to get, and am still digging up info on the different species. 2. I'm in contact with a bird rescue group, and would like to either foster birds or adopt one (or more ). They just got in a bald male Eclectus who came from a bad home. I haven't taken the required parrot care class yet, and someone will probably take him before then, but in case they get another one in the future, I just want to know if its a candidate for me to foster/adopt.

I babysat a pair of red sided for three weeks. They are absolutely beautiful birds. The males are green and the females are crimson red. They have very long thin hair like feathers starting frm the head to the shoulders.
As for noise level, they do have a loud screech but this pair was very quiet and spoke several words. They screeched only once while flapping their wings because I had opened the window and a nice breeze was blowing through their cage. I guess they have the potential to be loud screams if they were handled improperly or been mistreated. If you are fostering/adopting rescued birds then the chances are high that they may loud.

Thanks for the input . Personally, bird noise doesn't bother me, but it grates on my dad. I don't want the bird to become an issue in the house, so I'm looking for something that's more of a jabber-jaw/singer/talker than a screamer. I don't know if the Eclectus at the rescue place has screaming problems, just feather plucking problems. They said he's a nice bird, and that in the right environment, he might feather out again.

Something I forgot to mention they are very, very messy eaters, more so than other parrots.

Messier than a conure ? When my family was getting ready to move, by dad was grumbling about cleaning and painting the wall behind the bird cage. It was covered in splotches of fruit juice. Jesse liked to squeeze fruit (like grapes and bing cherries) in his beak, while madly shaking his head. He liked to toss chunks of banana around too. I had to quit wearing white t-shirts, because they showed fruit stains to well .
