Someone told me today that parrots mimic words with d, k and t very quickly. Does anyone know if this true? From my many personal contacts with parrots, "Hello" is the one word that most of them repeat and it contains none of those letters.
Are there words parrots tend to mimic easily?
What were the first words your bird spoke?

I have also read that they can mimic the hard consonants more easily. The first word that Mitzi spoke was "hello". There are some words she hears every day which she has never repeated (e.g. biscuit) but recently when we had very hot weather she suddenly started saying "hot".

Joshua likes 'crrrr' and 'qua' sounds, but his vocabulary is fairly broad, things he has said in the last couple of days are:
"Hello darling, do you want a cup of tea?" "It's all right" "Say goodnight" "Quack quack" "Crackle" "Chuckle" "Tickle" "Come here" "Come on" "Do you want that?" "Is it good?" "What?" "Don't bite" "No" "Go to the loo?" "Want to come out" "Come to the loo" "You're a good boy" "You're a sweetheart" "Big bird" "Bird boy" "Toast" "It's hot"
I don't know if this helps at all!

Wow - just a few words there Lidia.
I was gonna do a post on here and see what unsual sounds their parrot makes that amazes them. I think the cleverest sound Mylo makes (he make many many sounds...) is running water. He makes the same sound as me pouring in water into his bowl. He does it when I turn on taps, run the bath, do my hair and he has word association which is really cool. Im sure this is a common sound for them to mimick but if you dont ask - you dont know do ya !

Barry,
I ordered a CD from somewhere (dont really wanna name them cos they r quite good) called Birdy Wordy specifically to play to parrots to learn but really all it was, was a CD of someone singing nursery rhymes. Ur probably be best off recording ur own tunes or even singing/whistling them yourself!! least that way, u will know the same tunes !!

BoBo has problems with any "S" sound....he tends to throw a rrrr sound in there with it. Traci - Once Boo starts there will be no stopping him! Enjoy the silence while you can ) BoBo has gone from approx. 5 words to about 125 in the past 9 months.

Nikko only has a few words/phrases that are crystal clear:
Hello Good morning Good night Nikko What are you doing? I love you You're bad
He says a lot of things where I can only understand a word or two, like:
blah blah blah food blah blah blah good bird blah blah blah sweetheart
I wish I knew what he was saying so that I could repeat it to him properly.
Nikko does the sound of water running too, which is pretty funny. This morning, when my mom was sneezing, he said, "Ah choo" for the first time. I also love his laugh, but he doesn't do that very much.
His current favorite is to wolf whistle.

ahhh i had a huge list and posted half of what i was writing!!
continuing on...
In the morning i have toast and coffee so whenever i pick up my mug susu tilts his head and makes sip noises and makes the sound of the mug being placed on the table; then picks his feet and 'eats' toast with me by putting his feet to his beak and making crunching noises, and then 'drinks' coffee again lol 'Oh God' whenever anyone passes him at night Imitates water flowing, bleching lol, whenever im in the kitchen cooking he'll mimick all the noises before i even engage in the activity, eg make a mixing noise before i put the spoon in the pot) Smoke alarm When i say bye to him before i leave the house he mimicks my purse zipper 'zzeeepp zeeep'. He can sing the overture in Phantom of the Opera Kisses 'hello, hello? hello?? oh hiiiii!!!' Imitating me while i talk long distance with a bad line 'Hmmm' whenever he sees me eat 'ahhh' (wisdom) 'ahhhh' (pleasure-dont ask LOL) Devilish laugh/mens laugh/womens laugh Baby crying sounds and then 'says 'ohhhh nooo' Mumbles a whole conversation which sounds arabic but I cant make out what he's saying...oh and then he'll laugh at the end of the conversation. Oh i think thats all... that is quite a bit! He makes more sounds that talks..which is cute as well! ohh i love him soo much

Actually, I think the imitation of sounds is just as good as talking. Susu sounds like a hoot . I love his imitation of you eating breakfast.
