Ever since my parents sold my conure (I was away at college), I've been lonely for a bird. Where is the best place to buy a bird? I bought my 2 childhood parakeets at a hardware store of all places, and my conure at a run of the mill petshop. However, I'm concerned that a petshop might not be the best place to buy certain types of birds. I've looked on the internet, but haven't been able to locate any breeders in my area (I live in Phoenix, so there should be breeders somewhere around here). How do I find some local breeders, and is there any way to find out what their reputations are?
I'm still exploring what kind of bird I should get, but I just want to be prepared when I decide.

I got Monty and Mitzi from a place which specialised in exotic birds. They in turn got them directly from the breeders. In considering what bird to get it is important to think about how much time you have available. Some species such as African Greys and Cockatoos require a lot of care and attention so you would need to decide how much time you have got to devote to a bird. Usually with breeders (and vets) their reputation is by word of mouth.
