Hi There My name is Dee and I have just adopted a CAG. His name is Perky and he is 22 years old. Today is his first day home and he doesn't seem to be nervous but is cautious. We currently have a quaker parrot however are keeping Perkey quarantined as advised by our vet. I'm thinking that a quarantine is good not only for health reasons but will also allow us time to interact with him prior to introducing him to our QP. Can you suggest how I should approach an introduction between the two birds? Once the quarantine period is up I would like to have both of them in the bird room together. They wouldn't have out of cage time unsupervised but their cages and supplies would be in that room. Perkey isn't used to being out of his cage either so will need to work on that. Thanks .. I'm sure I will be around quite a bit!

Hello Dee and welcome to the forum. I have two African Greys, they actually live together in the same cage now and have done for years but before that I had them in separate cages side by side. Obviously yours won't be in the same cage but if you put the cages near each other you can then watch how they respond to each other and go from there. African Greys can be less tolerant with birds of other species, even my Greys needed careful introduction, but it really depends on the individual birds.

Thanks for the reply Jane ...
I was thinking of putting their cages beside each other and then letting one out while the other is in the cage. Then letting the other out while the other is in the cage. That way they wouldn't interact but could explore and observe each other.
Would that be an ok approach before having them both out together?
Thanks

Yes that is a good idea but don't let them climb on the cages.

I agree with Jane. when Baby Girl accidentally lands atop Pete's cage you can clearly see the agression well up as he climbs up to remove the intruder. I always reach her in time for the rescue. If 1 is out and the other is in the cage will be close enough to jump over to the top of the other cage, the inside bird will try defend it's territory, and will cause much stress. I keep Pete, BG, Barney, and Romeo in the office each has their own corner with 12 feet distance between eachother. Smokey and Angel are in the Dinning Room. They all interact with eachother just fine at that distance. Keep in mind that a birds natural enimies attack from above, and a caged bird is severely threatened by another bird, especially when the species are different. I advise spreading them apart to let them have a territory all their own.

Thank you very much .. that is very helpful!
Would putting one cage in each corner facing each other ... so they can see each other be a good idea? They wouldn't be able to get to each other as they would be too far apart.
I also have a couple of hanging java gyms ... could they play together in these areas away from their individual cages while supervised?

Yes, the important thing is that they can see each other and you can observe their reactions before letting them out together. You will also have to be careful about any jealousy.

Thanks for the great info. I have a tiel and I was wondering how in the heck to introduce him to the TAG when I get him. My only next problem is how to stop the tiel from screaming so the TAG won't learn it.

My Sam (AG) has learned every call my 2 tiels have, but louder! He has not learned the pretty songs of the tiels. My grey has no problem with the tiels, but the tiels do not like him anywhere within 3 feet of them. They do tolerate being in the same room.

Well I have a tiel and a ag ... If you leave them out the same time make sure you are in the same room with them ... If am not in the room for a min my ag goes vist the tiel ... Yes the ag will get in the tiels cage if the door is open if not on the top ... The ag has to climb up the teils cage legs to do it ... its cute but don't trust the ag with the tiel ... The tiel is in heat (male ) and it does his little number on his perch and that awful sound they make .. and I will till skipper the teil to shut up and the ag now says shut up skippier ... ;D then she will say skipper my brother ... and make a kissing sound ...
