Hello everyone! First ~ let me say what a Great Site.... This is my first post, so here goes. I don't currently have a Grey, however I have wanted to be owned by one for a long time. I was planning and have been talking to a local breeder and was awaiting the next clutch when I saw an ad on another site for an almost 2 year old Congo "named Pinot". I looked at the pictures (that always helps sell) and decided to find out more. After a few emails back and forth I feel really good about this bird and owner. I talked on the phone with the current owner today and now feel even more so that this is the bird for me. Keep in mind that "Pinot" lives 4 hours away, so it's not like I can jump in the car and go visit. I have done the homework and feel that a Grey is a good fit for my household. We have had an Alexandrine so we have some bird experience, however this is a smart bird and a big committment and I intend to get it right so that we will get to live long together. So all that being said, What should I look for? I would love to hear some feed-back on what the pros and cons are of getting a 2 year old!

Did the owner say why they're getting rid of the bird? Does it have some issues? Has it been examined by a vet lately? If not, you might want to have it examined to make sure it's healthy, especially since you have a bird at home. I would also consider making a trip to visit the bird and to check out what kind of environment it's currently in. I just adopted a 4 year old TAG a couple weeks ago, and everything is going really well so far. He had an infection when I got him (which is why I suggest you quarantine the grey before introducing it to your Alexandrine) and needed medication, but hopefully he's recovered (will find out at next vet check). Also, with CAGs, they will often change their favorite human at around 2 or 3, so it may adjust to a new household quite nicely. Good luck, I hope you've found your grey !

Thanks spookyhurst, The current owners have a 7 month old baby and another one on the way. After talking to her it is very apparent to me that they do not want to let the bird go, but want what is best for him. They feel quilty that they are not spending as much time with him as they used to. They have been interviewing me basically, to make sure that my home would be a good fit. By them taking the time to get to know me shows me that they do care for and love the bird. Right now we do not have a bird, so the quarintine doesn't worry me. I can get him to the vet.
Great point that grey's change some at 2, so this might be the right time and bird for that matter!
Thanks again for the input! Hope your TAG recovers nicely!

Hi Sunny, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment adopting a 2 year old Grey. I got Pete at what was reported to me as 6 months old and he never skipped a beat falling into place around here. Speaking about around here, don't throw any rocks you may hit me!!! I live in Princeton, small world huh? I like to keep all communications on the forum because everyone can learn from them, but if you'd like E-Mail me, I'll give you my phone number since it's a local call.Jane and I have been hauntind Dandy's for almost 5 years now, and I have a good vet I can give you the heads up on, he is in Plano but very good. Vanessa at Princeton Animal Clinic is a good vet for dogs and farm animals but I stopped useing her for our birds for lack of experience and now use Dr. Blonden on Parker Rd. in Plano. Keep in touch. We have 6 Parrots and I wouldn't mind being owned by another Grey if you decide not to get the two year old. KN (breeders) in Wylie is a good place to get a bird, but the conditions are pretty bad. Pete was hatched there and has only gotten sick 2 times, both from a bacterial infection, but 1 of those was from stress when we didn't notice that his band was caught between his toes. Dr. B removed it for us since we were allready there, and needed lite antibiotic treatment. welcome to the forum neighbor.

Hi Preston... I will do my best to keep that rock throwing to a minimum! You guys are really close. Thanks for the offer of talking via email/phone, I will take you up on that.
Also I was planning on checking with my vet today regarding aviary care, not to sure if they see birds, so it's good to know there is a good aviary vet in Plano!
As for Pinot, I am not sure if this is going to work out or not. I have been talking with the current owners and they are having a hard time with the emotional part of Pinot leaving. They have had many people interested and told me today they felt best about me so far.... So we will see! I have my fingers crossed that everything works out and Pinot comes to live with us!
Again Thanks for the Welcomes, I look forward to reading about everyone birds and getting to know you guys!

Update! We are scheduled to go see/meet and pick-up Pinot November 12!
I just can't wait! So, I suppose a trip to the Pet Store for some new toys is in order! Actually I have many other things to think about and do! Where to put his cage etc.
The family that I am adopting him from are sooo nice and they really don't want him to go, which is breaking my heart....
