Hi , I am new mammy to a baby grey and have really got some great advice on this forum from everyone, but i still wonder about the noises and body language my bird shows me and i wonder if she is happy or sad etc... so i have decided to list a few and maybe everyone can share their bird sounds and hopefully we can make a list so new owners wont worry so much here goes....... * rubbing her beak on my hands i think this is a happy one ? * making coo-ing , gurgling sounds, i think this is a content one ? not sure * fluffing up, i read this can be an exicted reaction too not only a fear reaction cos she never does it when there is anything to be afrad of ? * opening her beak real wide but no sound comes out like she is trying to speak ?? not sure about that one ? * hissing and making sounds like a "hhhhaa" sound again when happy not a fear thing ? maybe she is trying to copy a laugh or sound she heard.... anyway they are my mysterious sounds maybe you could share yours too Suzanne

rubbing her beak: sydney and my mom's two birds will do this usually if they are trying to get food off their beaks, sometimes they will do it out of excitment.
making coo-ing , gurgling sounds: Hard so say without actually hearing them... but birds like to make little sounds, beeps, and such. probably nothing to worry about.
fluffing up; opening her beak; hissing: Three things... 1-They can fluff up just because they are excited. 2-they can fluff from preening or from you scratching them. or 3. Its known as the "Grey Growl" this can happen if they are scared or frightend of somthing such as, a dog, a new toy, sometimes even people. Sydney puffs all up mouth WIDE open and does this loud growl when my dogs come around her, sounds like somthing from a horror film, lol... She will also just be fluffed with her mouth wide open and not make any sounds.

Rubbing her beak: either cleaning it on you (there's a thread about that somewhere) or testing the feeling on her beak, ie, amusing herself!
Cooing and gurgling, sounds pretty contented, perhaps proto-speech. Could be anything (but good).
Fluffing up, could be trying to be a baby again for you, wanting cuddles. Doesn't sound like the angry kind of fluffing up. Joshua sometimes does this when he's trying to be cute.
Opening her beak real wide: sounds like a yawn to me! Little tongue gets stuck out, too, probably.
Hissing and making a sound like haaa, could be anything. So long as she's not doing the hissing and the fluffing together, she is probably just practising something or other.
All cute.

Rubbing the beak is affection or wanting you to feed them something. They also rub their beaks on your clothes so that THEIR beaks stay nice and clean! Cooing and gurgling noises are usually happy ones. Growling and crackling noises are not! Mitzi will make a quiet clucking sort of noise to attract my attention. Fluffing up all the feathers and trying to look bigger is often because of something or someone they are not sure about. All the feathers go up at once. They also fluff up just the neck feathers when relaxed. Opening the beak wide is another thing they do from time to time, it is like an exaggerated yawn but there doesn't seem to be a definite reason for it.
