Hi all, I finally got my new grey, she is adorable , i took her home last night and she seemed really happy in her new cage and she started to play with her new toys right away, her cage has a play stand and she let me put her up there for a while and came back down when i wanted to put her back in, so far so good, only thing is she was hand feed by a male and you can see her really respond to my boyfriends voice more than mine, i know its very early days but i dont want her to not like me as i will be the one looking after her, do you thing she will come around ? I cant think of a name yet, so if anyone has any idea's please throw them my way thanks Suzanne

Congratulations. Just carry on as you are, I am sure she will like you. As you probably know, Greys do sometimes choose favourite people regardless of who looks after them but in this case she is probably just remembering she was fed by someone whose voice sounds like your boyfriend's voice.

thanks jane,
she is really smart and she has let me hold her again this morning after a bite or two.... but i will persist, she is kind of gibbering something , is this the start of words ?? also at night, do i need to cover her, she was good all thru her first nite and didnt make a sound, do greys usually sleep thru the nite also ? i dont want to upset the neighbours incase she is making noise while I am asleep ?
thanks for the help

Yes it may well be the start of talking, as they are often not at all clear to begin with. It is a good idea to cover them, it provides extra security and privacy and they do need to sleep all through the night.

Sue, She's absolutely gorgeous, what a little star! You must be so excited. She will be fine with you, she is already mumbling at you, which is a FABULOUS sign, and she is letting you handle her very extensively. What sort of cage did you end up with? And how was your holiday? Lidia

hi Lidia, the holiday was great, i brought home so many parrot toy's i dont know how i didnt get arrested in the airport ;D , I am so happy with my new birdie, i only have her 2 days and already she has taken center stage in the house.... i ended up buying a cage in dublin, it has a play stand on top and is a good size, she seems really happy, I open the door when i am there to watch her and she climbs out herself and makes her way up to the play stand... she attempted to fly today and had a bit of a crash landing but she was fine, she really like's showing off for my boyfriend and she whistled at him this morning when he came down to go to work very cute, i hope she bonds as well with me cos she is so amusing to watch, now i know what all you guys where talking about she closes her little eyes when you scratch her neck.... awww ......as you can see she has melted my heart already Suzanne

Su, I am sure she is showing off to your boyfriend because you give him attention, and she is trying to be part of the family group (and doing a good job on you by the sound of it!!!). Names ... I nearly called Joshua: Wolf, Sybil, Isaac, Zebediah, and various others things. Oh, and my friend's mother thinks Joshua's name is "Jupiter" which, had I thought of it sixteen years ago, it would have been. What about calling new baby after a planet? Saturn? Mercury! or a Greek or Roman god? Aphrodite? Zeus? Herakles? Hera? Venus? Apollo? I'm really happy for you, your baby has lovely large eyes and looks really bright and full of curiosity. What sort of cage did you find here, and where did you get it? I am still looking for one, and the only one I can see that I could remotely afford is this one online: www.parrotsupplies.co.uk/pd_montana_haiti_cage_622.html ;)Lidia ps. I'm not sure if that aspidistra (if that's what it is) is poisonous, you should probably find out before she begins to try to chew it up. Must go now to watch double "Lost".

hey thanks for the hints.. my other half is mad into space stuff so i am sure we will come up with something, i got the cage in petstop in blanchardstown, i had tried all the english suppliers and the most of them will not ship to ireland as they had done so before and cages had been damaged so they refused to do it again ? most of them wanted over 120 sterling to send a cage by ups, so thats why i had to settle for the one here, its like the one you have in your link except its square top with play stand on top and a hook/arm to hang toys and feeding dishes, it was 280 euro !! but it had to be got and i had searched suppliers in nothern ireland too and found nothing , anyway my bird was the most curious of the 3 the breeder had and like i had read on this forum, i hoped one of them would give me a sign as such so this one picked up a plastic raw plug that was on the table in the breeders house and went over and hopped on to my boyfriends hand and with him being a carpenter, that was it she was picked, weird or what i have already moved the plant from behind her cage , thanks .... her granny and grandad came for avisit tonite to check out their new grandbirdie and she behaved very well... i sound like a nutter so i will go now this is the influence she has on me already....

Su,
You're not a nutter or, if you are, you're in good company! My mother calls Joshua her 'grandparrot', and my father calls him "Don't you think it's about time you got rid of that thing?" or "Is he being fattened for Christmas?"
You couldn't give me the the name of the shop in Blanchardstown, could you? 280 euro isn't too bad if you take into account the shipping costs and euro/sterling difference on the cage I was looking at. How big is your cage, is it a similar size to the one in my link?
Have you got a name for baby yet? It's really nice that she is getting on with both you and your fella and that you're getting all that good advice about getting her used to being sprayed and bathed at an early age. I wish I'd had a forum like this to come to for advice back in 1989 when I got Joshua. You might think about getting a harness for her also, while she is still babyish enough to allow you to put her into it, that would mean you could take her outside with you safely enough (or if you have a balcony, sit outside with her, etc).
Lidia ;D
