Hi Everyone..
I've been a regular peeper on this forum. I recently got my first CAG, the baby's about 4.5 months old. It eats the seeds I have in the cage, but I still have to hand feed the formula twice a day. My question is --is this a kind a of transition phase when babies eat both solid and liquid foods, if yes how long does it last before the baby starts eating only the solid food completely on it's own? any thing else I should now about babies, at this stage? Also it keeps groming itself continuously for about 5 to 10 minutes than stops!, is this normal or does it(bart) have a (pest) problem? btw it's a little boy, very active!!
thx

They will sit for for ever preening themselves if they are content with the surroundings. Try once a day and see if he's content with the solid diet. Introduce veggies and fruit now, and he'll probably be weened. Watch is all you can do. It would be nice if had a scale to weigh him to see if he is progressing.

Weaning is a transition between eating the baby food and eating solid food, so it is gradual with the number of feeds gradually reduced. CAGs are usually fully weaned somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks but may well continue to accept baby food for longer than that. My two will eat anything soft and warm that I give them on a spoon and they are approaching 14 and 12 years old.
I would do as Preston suggested and reduce the feeds.
Grooming is normal, they do it a great deal of the time because it is instinctive to keep the feathers in good condition.
