Hi everyone,
I'm a new grey owner, and have a question. My family's cag (affectionately named Chili) just turned 4 months old, and has been with the family for about 1 month now. He's healthy, appears happy, and is learning to whistle very well. He has really fit in with the family well, and gets loads of attention every day.
One challenge we are having is he likes to fly (and flap his wings in general)! He generally enjoyes standing on top of his cage and flapping his wings as hard as he can (usually lifting himself off the cage until he realizes he's no longer grounded). Lately, when he is with a family member, he has become quite comfortable with leaping off and trying to fly all over the house. Chili's breeder clipped his wings the day before we picked him up and assured us he was fully fledged. We've since spoken with her about Chili's new adventures and she suggested we take another inch off his flight feathers, which we did (we have previous wing clipping experience). She discoureaged us from clipping his feathers any more than that to avoid injury. Unfortunately, the breeder is about a 2 hour drive away, so working with her further in this is not a viable option.
Currently Chili does not gain any altitude and generally (in my opinion) glides at a safe rate, but he usually lands up running into a wall or window before he makes it to the floor.
I would like to work on discouraging the behaviour of flying off of us, but can't seem to find a method that yields success. Perhaps flying is too instinctive to curb?
Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
Thanks!
