Hello everyone.. Its about time my wife and I said hi to everyone one this forum. We have been reading all the threads and doing our homework before we bought our new "house mate". We have the cage ready and today we went to the breeder to see his young greys. He had 3 for us to choose from and they were all gorgeous birds, it was hard to pick one. We used the info we have read on this forum and watched them to see if one was more alert than the others etc, one of them in particular was quite chirpy and seemed very confident so we chose her. She will be ready to come home with us next Saturday. My concern is the breeder said she had broken her leg (the bird, not the breeder ! lol) in the nesting box, although it had now healed perfectly well. My question is will this cause any problems in the future or is it nothing to worry about ? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Vance & Lynn

I think as long as the broken leg was detected and treatment given as soon as the injury was discovered she should be okay, but calcium absorption is very important for Greys. If she is walking and perching (if she is old enough) with no visible problems I think she should be okay.

Thanks for the reply Jane. The breeder said he treated it straight away and he said she has just started perching with no problems. When she was sat on my hand and I was feeling her leg she didnt show any discomfort. Her leg has set ever so slightly off center , so to speak. I know human broken bones can heal ok with treatment and I presume its the same with birds. Thanks again Vance

Did the breeder say how the leg got broken? Dietary deficiencies can lead to bones being more susceptible to breaking and deformity. Bird bones are similar to human bones but they are much lighter and heal more quickly.

Jane No the breeder didnt say how it was broken, he just said it happened in the nest box. He seems to know what he is talking about and all the greys he showed us looked really healthy. Vance
