i currently bought a congo Grey which i have grown very attached to, it is still in the weaning process which i think it will be completed at the end of July. But when i was visting my parrot i noticed that one toe nail is missing, not the whole toe itself but just the nail part. Will it grow back??? It is really important if it doesnt have 1 nail missing???

If it is missing at such a young age perhaps he never had one for some reason. Birds are very adaptable and can manage without a nail, even without part of a toe so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thats so funny, I am buying a baby also that is still weaning. and it is missing a back toenail. I asked about it... It happens alot I was told... It occures when the baby is hatching and the tough membrane around the egg gets twisted around the toe, some birds loose whole toes when this occures, and some just a toenail.

Strange....I too saw a baby ysterday at the petshop missing a nail on it's front toe. I wonder why this is so, you would think that if the breeders checked the chicks at the time the eggs hatched they would have noticed the toe strangulation and remove the membrane before it caused any harm. Unless maybe it got bitten off or it is a deformity with excessive inbreeding.

If babies are raised by the parents in the nest for a short time before being removed by a breeder for hand feeding, as opposed to being incubated, sometimes the parents bite the toenail, or toe, off. I'm not sure why this happens, it may have something to do with parents breaking pin feathers and getting carried away, but I've seen it happen in several species, including greys, amazons, and cockatoos. Usually, the bird's fine and doesn't know what it's missing.
