Hi Everyone, Great Site!
Hope someone can help. We have had our baby African Grey (Tetley) for 2 weeks today, he is now 13 weeks old. In the last few days he has developed a squawk when eating. This lasts for the entire time he is eating and stops immediately when his finished his meal.
Is this normal?
Thanks
Max

I haven't heard of this before. If he had been doing it all the time you had him I would have said it was possibly a follow on from the noises he made as a baby being hand fed. Is it a sort of squawk as if something is uncomfortable when he is eating?

Thanks for the reply Jane.
I would say its more a baby noise, he does not seem in pain. When he knows I have fruit he starts the noise and has his mouth wide open.
I have been feeding him Parrot Mix and Pretty Parrot, but he seems to be eating just the Sunflower Seeds.
He has eaten most fruit and veg I have offered him plus pulses, but I am concerned that he is not eating the Parrot Mix, could this noise be a form of calling for more food?
Thanks Max

Well it does sound like begging in that case but if he is eating the fruit, vegetables and pulses you give him that is excellent because so many problems seem to be about them NOT eating these things! Keep offering him a wide variety of food, the greater the variety he has at an early age the more likely he will be to accept new things.

Hi, what about them just eating the Sunflower Seeds. My baby Francine don't eat much of the other seeds.

Sunflower seeds in themselves are not "bad" for them but a diet of ALL sunflower seeds is bad because they are not getting all the nutrients they require and sunflower seeds are high in fat.

And he's still very young, it sounds like he's using pre-weaning behaviour, perhaps to comfort himself while he's eating. Actually, it sounds really sweet.
