Hi, I hope someone will give me an answer. I have just adopted an african grey Timneh 1 week ago. He is 4 years old. He has a good backround, but family member became alergic. He is starting to open up and slowly adjusting. BUT.. I would love to take him out of his cage, but everytime I try to , he tries to bite me, and actually he did a few times. SOmetimes even if I just clean the cage or give him food, he comes and tries to attack. I read a lot about this behavior, I know he is nervous and scared, but I would like to know if I should keep trying to have him step on my finger or just wait when he comes out by himself. Previous owner had him out all the time. I guess I need more patience. If you have any input or experience, please reply, I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Patience is the key. It's only been a week. Keep a bit of distance from the cage while always talking to him. He will soon come out on his own and then you can start to approach him for step up work. Always have a treat with you. My bird looks to my left hand as I enter the room because I usually have something for him. One time I forgot, so I got an ice cube from my water glass that I just had refilled and gave it to him. The picture is on my site. Anything to build a routine will help him settle in.
