Hi there!
I am a brand new owner of a 20 month old Congo African Grey. He is nameless at this moment...I just can't make up my mind. I will let you know when I do! )
Well, I guess that I am feeling in need of some support. This is the first Parrot...okay, first bird, that I have even owned.
He spent the past 6 weeks in a local pet store as his previous owners little boy developed severe allergies and they could no longer keep him. He and I have developed a fairly good relationship to date as I spent 1.5 hours per day with him over the past 5 weeks. He handled his move into my home like a pro! (BTW - I've had him since Thursday night)
Concern #1: He currently has a chest sore (healing okay...not open wound...scab) due to poor handling by the pet store staff. This little guy does not have any flight feathers on his left side (they are growing in right now) and when frightened...leaps off the top of his cage...and drops like a rock...hence the chest sore. Today he was scared by the sudden appearance of my cat and took a leap (no blood...one of his better landings). I am torn between leaving him in his cage until he is healed...and taking him out because of his need for proper training (ie. step-up, step-down) which will help over all. I have hardwood floors which is why it's a big deal. Any suggestions?
Concern #2: St. Hubert...my cat. How close should I let them get in introduction? St. Hubert is very curious but I am nervous about both of their reactions. That being said - St. Hubert is very well trained/behaved and responds to voice commands...he is also an indoor cat. They are going to have to work it out eventually.
Concern #3: I had to go to a meeting at work yesterday so my parrot was left alone for several hours. After his morning poop he didn't go again for about 10 hours. I know that this is not normal could it have been the stress of the move? He is pooping normally today.
Im a bit of a nervous nelly - especially when it comes to the animals I love. Any advice or feedback that you can provide me to make the next couple of weeks a little less stressful (especially for me!) that would be wonderful.
