John, As a Professional Engineer, I watched the news, and knew that there were underlying horrors they didn't even know to describe to the world. I remember today what I thought on 9-11 when my wife called me at work. I had a small TV in my office that received UHF channels, and those are spanish speaking. I'm fluent in Spanish, and saw the second plane hit, and told her the fireproofing on the steel will fail. The world watched in aww, I knew what was going to happen. I'm not schooled in the causes of disasters, but try to design for the effect. I just wish he could have built a stronger building, so does he, and we both know it was impossible. The same for the Big Easy, designed for a CAT-3, and here comes a CAT-5. I'm glad to know you, and that your world survived, the news has forgotten N.O. so we don't know the conditions that are left.

I live in a suburb of New Orleans so my area didn't flood as bad but any amount of water in your home is bad. I didn't get water in my home but my garage had 2 feet of water so I lost almost everything there. Just a few blocks from they had 2 to 4 feet of water in homes. If your house didn't flood then a tree went through the roof, no homes were without damage. It will be a long time before the city recovers.

Thanks Preston. If you ever get the urge to come to New Orleans I have a boat, no need to swim.

Can we catch some shrimp? I have a 30' center console Boston Whaler, and a 16,400 acre lake out front, but I like SHRIMP! Especially cajiun <SP> shrimp. I ain't eatin' no mud bugs though. LOL

I haven't been shrimping in years but I love to fish. I was looking for a link to some pictures of where the boat launch was. I haven't been fishing since before the storm and I am not sure when I will ever get to go again. The boat launch and everything around it was wiped out. There are other boat launches but that was my favorite. I am on the south shore of Lake Pontchatrain. It's 24 miles across north to south and about 40 miles east to west. I prefer mud bugs to shrimp, its an aquired taste I guess.

yes, the 24 mile bridge did well but the 5 mile I-10 bridge east of the city was wiped out. There was more damage east of me, I am 4 miles west of the city.

Actually, I do remember being reprimanded for sleeping in a truck waiting for delivery on Chapatuliah St. in ’77. I’m sure the spelling isn’t correct, but was told it was in the bad part of town. I had a Browning hi-power long slide pistol with me. That’s the 30 Cal rifle load, holds 8! I’ll always be judged by 12, before being carried by six! Still got that honker too! Need ear plugs! Slept like a baby. Anyhow, out of topic; I apologize, just reminiscing.

Preston, I finally found the link I was looking for. Click on the link then go to Hurricane Katrina pictures. The area that is pictured is where I would launch to go fishing. There is nothing left. www.fortbeauregardmarina.com/main.htmYou can get an idea of the power of the storm, John

This picture shows the boat hoist, its the tin roof at the bottom. The water way to the left is the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. The MRGO allows ships to bypass the Mississippi River and get inland to shipping ports from the Gulf of Mexico. In the background is whats left of multi-million dollar fishing camps. The water level here was at least 30 feet. In some of the pictures you can see marsh grass on the roofs of camps. My old boss had a (camp) here, it was 3 stories tall, 3800 sq.ft. and cost $500,000.00 to build. I hope they rebuild this area as I have been fishing here for 34 years.
