We put a new toy in Ash's cage, oh about a week ago. It's just this round speaker with a bell on it, you can record 45 seconds of audio on it and when it's move it will replay the recording. Ash is obsessed with it, to the point where she doesn't even want to come out of her cage when I get home from work. When I finally do get her out of her cage she just wants to head right back upstairs. It's starting to concern us, I think the toy needs to come out. She's never acted like this before, 99% of the time she is afraid of whatever toy we try to introduce. I put a link below for the toy. Toy

Chy would destroy the bell.
How does Beaker react to the toy?

Ash must really enjoy it. She has quickly learnt how she can make it talk and that it is responding to her playing with it.

Got the toy, it took Beaker about an hour to remove the ringer from the bell.
He hasn't mimicked anything I recorded yet.

I think Ash has decided the toy is her mate, it has totally changed her behavior. She will barely leave her cage. When we can get her out she'll poop, eat something and then work very hard to get back to her room to get to her cage. We've turned the toy off now to see that will make a difference, if not we may need to remove it.

Mitzi has only ever seen me as her mate and when she gets broody she will start a display and I have to distract her. That could be something to look out for with Ash.
The other thing I am wondering, as she is so obsessed with it and doesn't want to leave it alone, is that she sees it as a chick. Because it is interactive toy and responds to her moving it she might see it as a chick response.

Update: Ash will only leave her toy a few hours a day. When she is out of her cage she her normal self. Talking, eating a lot, but all too soon she will just walk back to her cage and go sit next to her toy. At this point I don't know if it will do more harm than good to remove it.

Taking it out might upset her. I wonder if you could move it somewhere else in the cage or put another new toy in as well to see if it distracts her.

I made an appointment for her at the vet for next week, just to make sure nothing is wrong. We moved the toy and she just moved along with it. We added a new toy and it's ignored. It's so strange. A toy broke my bird.

Is it still switched off?
I am wondering what she would do if you recorded something completely different, maybe even some sort of sound that isn't very pleasant. (Not anything that might scare her of course).

Yeah it's off. We tried a few different recordings, it seems to be irrelevant what sound it makes.

The vet said nothing physically wrong and just to get rid of the toy. We took the toy out and it was like flipping a switch, right back to the same old bird. We put the toy on a perch outside of her room just to see her reaction and she doesn't seem to care about it, she'll poke at it, but it's no longer the object of affection.
Strange bird.
