hey sylvie - i'd be a bit cautious of using boxes with printed dye on them. some dyes may be toxic. you could try, instead, the plain inner roll from your toilet paper, or carlton towels - close off the ends with scrunchled paper and stuff treats inside....my boy lucky really enjoys those.

We do that too. Take a paper towel roll and cut diamonds around it every few spaces stuff with good things like almonds, treats, walnuts, etc., tie off the ends and hang in the cage. The girls can see the treats through the diamonds, but have to work to get them out.

Thank you all for your support. His name is Joe. I also live with my husband, children a Hahn's Macaw a parrotlet and our Sheltie. He does seem to not like any of his toys but I am taking it slow and will keep trying. I leave the door to his cage open all day but he does not seem to be too interested in coming out. I have been talking and reading to him a lot. He has also started two things. The first is kind of bending over and flapping his wings in small quick movements. The other thing is stretching up his body and neck real tall and lifting and lowering one foot. Does anyone have an idea what either of these means? Thanks, Donna and Joe Bird

hey donna the first action - does he make little whimper noises? or little baby clicks? it sounds like it might be the start of his bonding with you. the second - that almost sounds like he's getting ready to allow you to get him to step up. i wouldn't worry too much about him not wanting to come out of the cage yet. its excellent that you are taking your time with him. maybe, shift your chair a little farther away from the cage so he has to work a bit harder to get near you (work as in come to the door etc) has he started making noises at your prompts? if you whistle, does he respond? have you tried using very plain and simple things like toilet roll inner tube? my lucky doesn't like brightly coloured things at all and i've long since stopped wasting money buying him toys. I just give him either old newspaper or telephone books (which he loves to shred) or nice sized sticks from my garden (check out the FAQ'a section for a list of safe / unsafe plants for Parrots) or just plain old nuts etc for him to chomp.
