Hi, Im new here and have just got a baby CAG who I have named Harry. Hes been here a week now and hes 13.5 weeks old and doing just great Hes so confident he amazes me but boyy is he strong willed, he knows exactly what he wants and what he will or wont do He steps up no problem and I have just got him a playstand so we can practice flying with him, as hes not so hot on landing. Im standing just over a step away and holding a tiny treat and asking him to fly to me so he can get used to landing on my arm...when he feels like it lol Mostly hes just chilling and exploring and getting to know everything and us. Supervising the homework!! Natalie

Congratulations Natalie on your new addition Harry. Welcome to the Grey Forum Family, everyone is very helpful here with any issues that may come up, and we are always very excited to hear stories and see photos. This forum has been the most help to me since I got Sid over 3 years ago, and have gotten me and Sid through our ups and downs. Harry looks like such a sweetie, Enjoy him .

Very alert nice looking Grey, very attentive. He has also fledged early plus learned to perch early. Please learn to clip his wings. The birds here that you see flighted are well trained; I just don't want another accidental exodus. Welcome and stick around to tell us the stories.
Or train him to fly, the board it split on that subject.
EDIT: Reread the post and saw flight training and it is her choice as you know my stance on the subject.

Thanks Preston, I will be considering getting his wings clipped when he is older. His breeder suggested doing that when he was a year old. He isnt flying huge amounts at the minute just a couple of feet from arm to perch on his playstand..really just to get him confident on landing. Its coming into winter now so we dont have windows/doors open. He wont be given free flying around the house, just in a room with the door shut. Ive read up on both sides of the clipping split and tend to agree with leaving him until he is a bit older, as long as he is confident landing so he doesnt hurt himself...obviously will always reconsider if that doesnt turn out to be best for Harry Natalie

I wish you luck with teaching harry to land safely. lucky (my monster) has no idea how to do this, except to crash land. Adele is our resident genius on flight and all things flight training & related. she might have some good ideas for you.
With lucky i've found it best to leave him to do his thing. he'd not been clipped when i first got him 3 years ago at the age of 40, and once i'd let him out of his cage, he was continually crashing into things and injuring himself. I clipped him once i returned to johannesburg, and he was ground based for a long time as his feathers re-grew. He now has full feathers but still of himself prefers to be on the ground. Whenever he flies, he seems to scare himself silly (and i can say this becuase once he's crashed to the ground, he stays wherever he landed and cackles his "MOM WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU, I NEED YOU RIGHT THIS VERY MOMENT NOW" alarm call until i come and scoop him up and stoke him calm again).
I've not needed to clip him again since as he's never shown any inclination to fly away.
I'd strongly suggest that you read through both Adele's MANY postings on her flight training of Manzi, and Shanlung's wonderful blogs & postings on his life with Riamfada etc. You will get the most brilliant insights into the process, patience, love and understanding needed for success.

Remember even if he can land fully flighted, when his wings are clipped that is a different matter and he won't be so graceful.
I keep my girls clipped. I've seen the damage a hawk can do to a gray and an amazon.

Bear in mind that, in the wild, these birds follow their parents for months and months, even years. Handfeed your bird daily to teach him/her that you will take care of him, and provide for him. It will build a nice strong bond, and a confident well adjusted bird. He is very young to truly be "weaned". Just hand feed warm, soft food. (Birdie bread, purreed fruits/veggies/babyfood
