Greys neurotic birds, and need time to cope with changes, especially big changes like that. He will come on his own time. Use lots of positive praise as they can sence it in your voice and facial expressions.

Mark
He probably feels that his cage is his sanctuary, somewhere he feels safe and at home! Given time he will be more adventurous.

We opening Koko's cage about 7.00 p.m., but he come out from the cage in the morning. I suppose, because then he is most playful. Now Koko go into a cage only when he want to eat.

Mark Maybe you are wearing something he doesn't like, they can be very fussy about clothes, colours, patterns etc.

Mark Yes it could be the jewellery, they can easily get spooked.
I once got a terrified reaction to the nail varnish I was wearing - Mitzi went beserk!

Hi Mark, Let’s try to set a scenario for you to tame your little guy. Only put your hands into the cage to change the bowls. Give treats through the bars while talking to him positively; like you’re having fun being around him (they sense your attitude). Keep the cage cleaning to a minimum (you can step up the schedule later). After he finds his cage to be his, he will be more apt to venture out. I have found Pine Nuts (PIÑION NUTS) are the best. They can be had at the supermarket because of their use on salads. Pete has to be calmed down because he wants to swallow them whole! Next: place a bar stool or other piece of furniture outside of his cage, and extend a ladder for him to traverse the gap. This will be his place also. Slowly switch from the through the bar treats, to him coming out to get one. He will only duck out at first, then a rong or two; praise him with a heart felt good boys as they again sense your attitude. This may, and probably will, take months; the reward is worth it! Click on the hyperlink to see Pete’s setup. I attribute Pete’s success to the fact that he is so close to me when I’m home, but this didn’t happen overnight by far. I had to build the shield because he feels so comfortable on the desk; everything belongs to him; including stealing the keys of my keyboard! Birds are wild animals and by no means domesticated. Who owns who is determined by a mutual agreement between them and you! This agreement takes time. Those who keep asking WHEN, plan on a year so you won’t be disappointed, and if that disappoints you; you relatively signed a 50 year contract to care for this precious creature, that at times, may not seem to appreciate it. You haven’t past the hard part to reap the reward yet. When he comes laboring across the floor, through the game room; into the dining room to see you, calling “Daddy”, twisting his sideways to see you, whispering “it’s a good boy”. All those nips, growls, and evasions go away! His travels depend on our three dogs knowing that their very lives depend on them not bothering him, but he doesn’t know that. This is the difference between domesticated and wild animals. Patience my friend, think trust, and wild animal! Look at this picture as it will show you the reason to my success with my Grey. He has all of what I have explained; his cage, and his outer place. HTTP://home.chilitech.net/~pstone/picstage.htm

Thanks Preston for another great reply!! To be honest he has really got loads better today and as you say It will not happen overnight.will take all your points on board and use them gradually. The thing is he plays with all his toys and then I have to put them back up and this upsets him....especially when working on top of cage......should I just leave that toy down until later as he has many others??? and at the moment I clean him out everyday,he has already given hours of fun..many thanks again!!

Yeah, don't invade his cage. If pete drops a toy to the floor; he learned to climb down and get it. Let him learn to fend for himself, after all he thinks that it's his world. You just happen to be a BIG BIRD getting in his way. Stand clear and approach as he allows. The next thing you'll come up against; is that your are the BIG BIRD, but only after the trust has been established! You'll do fine, just time is what your not including into the equation.
Recheck that link.. I fixed it!
