Here's one more example of a bird understanding language: www.garudaaviary.org/Our_Birds/Dutsi/dutsi.htmlDutsi is an Umbrella Cockatoo (which are parrots native to Indonesia) and the Garuda Aviary’s class clown. She sings, dances, hops with her crest up, and uses language appropriately. Here is a true story: one of our Directors, Alana, was trying to calm down a screaming Moluccan Cockatoo by giving her a shower with the hose. Dutsi made her way over across the flight cage and said, clear as a bell, “Whaddyadoin?”. Alana answered, “Giving Tara a shower.” Dutsi paused and then said, “Why?” Shocked, Alana replied, “Because she’s screaming and too wound up.” Dutsi paused, her black eye came closer, and then she said, “I’m being good!”
Another time the founder of the aviary, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo, to whom Dutsi is very bonded, went away on a teaching tour for 3 weeks. When she walked back into the aviary, Dutsi turned her back to her. Jetsunma asked, “Dutsi, are you mad at me?” Dutsi turned, looked at her, and said, “You forgot me!”
Dutsi helps us remember how intelligent and emotionally sensitive all these birds are, even if they don’t ‘speak English’ as well as Dutsi can.
