Good afternoon and thank you to the admins for creating this forum!
I'm Friday and am new to the African Grey world! I recently adopted a 35 yr old AG whose owner ran into some circumstances where she could no longer care for her. Her name is Ernie (they thought she was a boy up until a couple years ago ^^; ) and she is super sweet. Unfortunately, for about two months (that I know of) Ernie was by herself with about and hour or so of interaction with people and due to the stress, she has plucked out everything except for her head - but she probably would have if she could've.
We've had her for a week and a half, and she seems to have settled for the most part. I started her on hemp seed oil to see if that would help with plucking and initial nerves and so far so good. No signs of plucking or any mutilation whatsoever. She enjoys mandarin oranges and pears, and I introduced apples today. Ernie hates leafy greens and seems to only eat the peanuts and sunflower seeds out of the food they gave me (Kaytee Fortidiet).
I joined today in hopes I can learn from you sages. I want to get her on the healthiest diet I can and make her life as enjoyable as possible. Here are some close-ups of Ernie. I would love critique on her cage, diet, etc. Whatever everyone thinks I can improve on! (That was a pre-clean picture btw)
I have a concern right now which would be about the redness near her eyes. If you look at the pictures, you can see that shes got a blush going on but today I noticed a more vivid redness above her left eye. Another question I have would be about baths. She seems to get bits of food on her, and since she's naked it sticks to her skin. I've tried spritzing with warm water but she doesn't seem to appreciate it - and I was thinking of taking a warm damp towel to wherever she will let me touch her.
Thanks in advance!
