Hi Everyone
I am in the process of working with a rescue to adopt an adult gray in its late 20's. I know when bringing a new bird home you should quarantine it to not harm other birds in your household if your new bird has any health issues or is sick.
what about bringing a new bird home to a household that has no birds but a dog? does the same rule of thumb follow? should the bird and dog be separate until the bird is seen by my vet? wasn't sure if a bird can transmit any diseases to a dog or not?
other question I have is obviously taking in a new bird is stressful for the bird, my gray will be transported a small cage but is it ok to put the bird in its large cage i have at home for it when i first bring it home? or do you think allowing it to stay in a very small cage to transition to its surrounding is better then moving it to its permanent large cage right away? If so what do you think the time frame is ? I am thinking that putting it in its larger permanent cage right away will allow the bird to start adjusting immediately but just wanted everyone's thoughts.
last but not least . i know it takes time and patience to build that trust with a grey , how long before I opt to open the birds cage to let it out. is that something that you think should only be done when I know the bird trusts me and will step up? just nervous if I do let it out that it wont go back and being I own a dog I want to assure they are familiar with each other and no harm comes to the bird ....
trying to be prepared before my grey comes home to assure its the smoothest transition for all.
