My first child got bit by my parrot when she was a baby, so we plexiglassed the cage so no fingers could get through. Then my boy never got bit. But today my 11 month old girl got bit. The plexiglass is still there, but she somehow got her fingers through a gap. I'm still not sure where, but I taped a bunch more.
It was a fairly nasty bite. My brother-in-law is a hand surgeon, so I sent him some photos and he said it should be fine. It got the fingernail, but it isn't gaping. It bled a ton and I had to keep pressure on it for a few minutes to get the bleeding to stop. I feel awful for my poor daughter!! It is really hard with parrots and little babies. My two older kids know how to interact with the parrots, but my baby doesn't know any better. My husband was thinking of getting a baby gate to cordon off the whole area. Has anyone used those with parrots and babies?

Your poor baby. We all know how much those bites hurt but we are adults and can handle them better. It is not just babies who don't know how to interact with parrots. Chy is used to me giving her treats with my fingers. My son-in-law tried to give her a nut from the palm of his hand. She bit his finger instead of taking the nut.
My grandson was born the same day as your oldest child. We were his caregivers until he was three and had a baby gate. It worked for a little while. Chy doesn't fly so she practised until she could climb up the bars. Then the baby gate became her favourite perch where she could reach to chomp on the wall and pantry door.

Adele - how is your baby, is the injury healing up okay?
Mitzi bit my neighbour once, I had told her not to put her fingers through the bars but she said: "Oh you won't bite me will you Mitzi" She got bitten.

I remember you posting about the neighbor getting bit Jane.
We kept her finger bandaged the first couple days, but then it healed together quite nicely. Now we've been leaving it unbandaged and our daughter seems totally fine.
When my older daughter got bit as a toddler, I was traveling for work. I got home two days later and saw her finger all swollen and infected. But even with that, we were able to wash it out really well and by the next day the redness had already started to go away.
Both of my daughters getting bit were on my husband's watch!! He's always worried about me getting mad at him when something happens to the kids on his watch! But the parrots are definitely mine, so I feel awful about it. Some of my siblings said that if their dog bit their kid, they'd never keep it around. But parrots aren't the same. I can't just scold them. Instead, I have to take a lot more measures to keep little fingers from getting into the cage, and also make sure that there are lots of positive interactions between the kids and parrots, so if they do have an opportunity to bite, they'll feel a lot less inclined to do so.
