I was out for 10 days backpacking and just got back. Manzi was so excited to see me. He is on good terms with Maui, but not great terms and is being very friendly to me.
While away, my neighbor was stopping by daily and she said the birds chatted with her so much. They often come for dinner, or to hang out. In the aviary outside, the neighbor is always whistling to the birds and they love whistling back (especially since I can't whistle). But seeing them every day, they chatted away and the neighbors never heard them talk so much. The neighbors grew quite fond of my two and said they already miss seeing them.

That's a great benefit to have a neighbor like that so you can keep your birds home and in familiar surroundings and then they can be checked up on daily! Since they have each other and get along reasonably well that must help prevent them from getting bored. Boarding Ruby when we've gone away has always been a bit of a nightmare/guilt trip for us; much prefer if she could stay home.

When I had just Manzi, I would usually bring him to a friend's house if I went away, with his cage and all. But with two, it is a lot more difficult. I actually had two people coming every day to check on them. My neighbors, and then some friends in the afternoon to feed and water.
My favorite was when I lived in a huge apartment complex and the neighbor's kid would come and scrub down the entire cage every week for $10. Totally worth it for a spotless cage.

We are lucky to have good friends who are neighbours. Whenever we go away, they come over and take care of Chyloe, water the plants, bring in the mail etc. They even have their evening meal over here so they can let Chyloe have time out of her cage.
We couldn't hope for better friends. Of course, we reciprocate and take care of their place whenever they travel although they don't have any pets. They make up for it by having humongous gardens front and back which are a lot more work than Chyloe.

Adele - I can't whistle either. Sometimes if I am in another room Mitzi and I play a game where she makes a clicking sound and I make the same sound (the one where you put your tongue in the roof of your mouth) She will click a number of times and I will click the same number, she increases the number each time. Then she whistles in between and I have to tell her I can't do that!

Beaker and I play the "clicking" game as well.
He clicks his beak and I click my fingernails.
I always tell him he can do it so much louder than I can.

Chy and I don't click. However, we do whistle back and forth. I get tired of the game before Chy does.
