Tuesday I had quite the scare. A combination of bad events led to Manzi getting out of the aviary and flying away. Around 3pm. Manzi landed in a nearby tree and immediately called to me. He was pretty high up though and wasn't sure how to fly back down. It was in the neighbor's yard. She was really nice, and kept an eye on him as well. Eventually, he left the tree, but just went to another tree even further away. At this point though, Manzi wasn't too concerned and was even playing in the trees (hanging upside down, chewing on leaves, etc.). Then it started getting dark and Manzi began calling in more earnest and started attempting to fly down to me. He tried once, but by the time he was at my level, he was going way to fast and he went about 5 feet above my head, then disappeared. Then it was too dark and Manzi didn't call anymore and I couldn't find him.
I went in for the night, and tried again first thing in the morning. The next day, Manzi happily making lots of noise, so he was really easy to find. He was playing having a great time. I knew he wasn't desperate and wasn't going to fly to me any time soon. It wasn't till around 10am, that he started attempting to fly back to me. He did 4 different attempts, each time screaming as he was over my head, going way too fast. Then he'd land in another tree and rest for an hour, and try again. Finally, at 3pm, he tried flying to me, missed again, but circled around and was able to stick the landing.
He was so thirsty by that point, that he didn't even touch the almond I had in my hand for him. Instead, he went straight for his water as soon as he got back home. Then he went back for the almonds.
It was quite the stressful time for me. I hardly slept at night. For those of you who know more about Manzi, this was especially scary since Manzi stopped liking me about a year ago. He has seen me as a threat to him and his partner, Maui. I haven't been able to hold him during this time. I wasn't sure he'd even fly back to me since he hasn't been friendly towards me in so long. But turns out, he doesn't like me around Maui, but I'm still his second favorite. He was so excited to land on my hand when he finally came back that he gave me kisses. It nearly made me tear up. He did have so much fun flying though, that it makes me consider allowing him to free fly again (like he used to 10 years ago). And surprisingly, since this experience, I almost have my old Manzi back. He's not being super sweet towards me, but he has been coming to me and I've been holding him every day again. I first put Maui in the aviary outside, then when it is just me and him, he comes and hangs out with me. In addition, the first day I went to put him with Maui in the aviary and he refused and wanted to stay. That is when I tried to hold him and he happily came onto my hand. I'm not petting him, but I am giving him treats. After 30 minutes, he was ready to go into the aviary with Maui. Now that's been our new morning routine.
