Hello everyone.
SHORT STORY
I am in need of some advise about my African gray. There is a really long back story to all this that i will put at the bottom if anyone is interested.
My African gray is called Max and he just coming up to 5 months old however i am having some issues with him. The main issues i am having are; He flies round the room screaming constantly. He wont stay still for more than 2 minutes and worst of all he has started flying at the faces of my friends and family with his feet kicked out. When people come round his neck and back feathers are really puffed up. He used to be fine with my parents coming round but recently he doesn't seem to be happy. I have the idea of getting him clipped as the screaming while flying makes me very anxious. Any ideas or advise?
BACK STORY
I used to have an African gray called Milo who was the best parrot anyone could ever ask for however he was diagnosed with beak and feather disease about 6 months after we got him. He took it all in is stride and even though his feathers and what not started falling out he was always so good. In the beginning he liked to have a little fly round but would sit next to me mostly and generally loved my company. Sadly he passed away about 3 months ago due to a really bad infection and i had to make the call to have him put down. This was the hardest decision i ever had to make but i didn't want my boy suffering. This hit my wife pretty hard as well.
About 3 weeks after Milo died my grandfather passed away and it made the pain even worse. We both never really felt right and decided to get a gold and blue macaw called Sully. I was stupid and didn't see the bird before getting him but had him transported to me. When he arrived he was not hand reared as advertised and became extremely aggressive towards me and my wife. We had a local rescue come and see his progress and they were shocked at how aggressive he was. Sully caused me to have really bad panic attacks and anxiety due to the constant ear piercing screeching and biting. I could not cope! I wasn't eating, i was avoiding him basically. The rescue offered to take him as they thought he may have been parrot raised. He went to the rescue and i started feeling normal again. I was eating and i thought that was the end of it.
We then got a hand reared African gray called Max and i started to feel really anxious again. I kept persisting with max and handled him a lot and fed him treats etc and it started to get better. I think my subconscious was associating max with the terrible time we had with sully. Max can be a good boy however he flies CONSTANTLY round the living room. He does not stay still for more than 2 minutes. While flying he screeches and screams also.
Recently he has started flying at peoples faces with his feet out going for them. We move him off peoples heads or away from them but he will fly at them constantly. This is a big problem for me and me and my wife as we may have kids in the next year or two. I am thinking about getting his wings clipped to stop him flying at people but i'm not 100% sure what to do. My anxiety is through the roof and i don't want to re-home him.
He has loads of toys but is never really interested in them.
