Hello everyone, i Just got a new baby Grey. i'm not sure of it's gender but i am already in love with it. This is not my first time hand feeding parrots but it's my first experience with a grey and i have sooo many questions! Like: at what age can i start training him? How can i teach him to talk and respond to what i say ? what are some ways i can interact with him at this age ? ( toys i can use or things i can do with him other than feed him). I wouldint say i'm inexperienced i would say i'm just curious and always like to double check everything that i do! Thanks !!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new Grey.
They are very intelligent and will decide for themselves what words and phrases they will pick up, they don't always say something they hear a lot. Sometimes they will make up their own sentences from words they know. Don't disturb him if he is sleeping but talk to him as much as you can and always tell him what you are doing, where you are going, what you are giving him, so that he learns in context. Mitzi started at five months with "hello" and she still says this more than anything else.

Great! thanks Jane. So i can't technically play with him until he is weaned...?

You can handle him and "play" with him right away. Just if he's sleeping, let him sleep and don't wake him up. Your baby won't be coordinated yet, so i can't imagine you'll be able to train much yet.

Welcome to the forum.
As Jane has said, greys will pick up whatever words they like. My Chyloe always greets people by name and says goodbye to them too. Yesterday, my husband was going on an errand alone. Chyloe said, "Daddy's going out. Bye bye". After he left, she said, "My daddy's gone." We have never used those words to her but she figured it out herself. They are incredibly intelligent so just talk to your bird as you would to a child and the bird will respond in kind.
As for playing with it, they usually like toys they can chew (wooden, cardboard, leather strip). Those things are good even before the bird is weaned.
Enjoy.

Hello!
I have a new baby bird too, he's just 5 months old and we have had him one week now.
He is DNA sexed so we know for sure we have a little boy, he was hand reared by the breeder (which resulted in him having one of his lovely wings fully clipped, so his balance isn't the best)
He already speaks, he says hello and laughs, also says 'kiss kiss. He fell off his perch twice and i told him to be careful so he now likes to say 'be careful' when hanging upside down. he whistles when i leave the room, sometimes he squarks so currently trying to train him that he will only get a response to a whistle when im not in the room.
Things with our little guy are going well, he knows when the curtains are closed he goes to bed and we hear nothing until we wake him the next morning, also when we leave the house we put the radio on and say goodbye to him.
We have started training early, he steps onto me and my boyfriend and loves kisses. He drops his beak for a kiss and he lets us tickle him already.
I'm by no means an expert as he is my first African grey (I have a parolete also) but i am loving every second of him so far!

Give him more formula and introduce other stuff slowly.
Sounds like the carrots weren't a hit.
