I have always covered the cage at night, with a sheet. They have had the same one for years and it now has several holes in it so yesterday I got them a new one. I wondered if they would protest because the old sheet was cream and the new one is grey but they were not at all bothered.
I hope they will stay that way and they won't suddenly have a delayed reaction, after I have thrown the old one out.

Not sure if you are covering them as it's getting dark or already dark, but I'm wondering just how good their vision is at night. Maybe they can't perceive the color difference?

I have a routine. I cover them late evening and the light is on. I cover the cage, then I play their musical box, say night night, put the light off and close the door.

When I changed Beakers sheet that covers his cage, things got better as the replacement is larger.
The old one was short and there were spaces he could go to and lookout of, make noises and yell out of.
Now, he goes to bed.

My first bird was a cockatiel and I used to cover him. He suffered from "night frights" which is not uncommon with cockatiels. With Ruby I just never did it and I think she's fine with it. Probably if I covered her now it might frighten her. Anyway she goes "night-night" like an angel after she's had her nightly routine of digging a cave in the couch and going in there for a while. ("Cave" meaning she squeezes between a pillow and the side of the couch haha!) Never hear a peep from her until the sun comes up, and then my little rooster alarm goes off like a champ.

I always cover Chyloe with a brown bedsheet and she is usually content until morning. The other night, hubby went back downstairs in the dark and startled her. She fell off her top perch and flapped around like crazy. Errol lifted the cover and tried to soothe her. She lost all the long feathers and several smaller feathers on her bad wing and one tail feather. Poor baby.
