So someone on the FaceBook African Grey forum posted a suggestion about getting inexpensive herb plants (sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, etc.) as something interesting for your bird as they can smell them and I guess gnaw on them somewhat.
I thought this was a reasonable idea so I went to Home Depot and bought a bunch of them - only a couple dollars each so a cheap experiment.
Well, Ruby is absolutely terrified of them. She won't go near them and it's been well over a month so it's not like she hasn't had time to get used to them. This is not atypical of her. She's always scared of anything new; most things she'll adapt to; some things she seems to NEVER adapt to. These plants seem to have fallen into the later category.
This has turned into a tremendous benefit because I now have an outstanding "goalie" I can put in front of all the "no-go" areas, most notably the electric outlets which are one of her personal favorites.
Sometimes things work out in life in unusual ways!

Haha!! I used to use a Halloween paper skeleton as a "no-go" sign. Manzi used to get so protective over the bathroom and get very aggressive once inside. One year, after being terrified on the skeleton, I finally broke it into pieces, and taped a piece over each place I didn't want him to go, and it worked great. That skeleton stayed up for an entire year, until Halloween came around again, and I took another trip to the dollar store to get a new one.
It did cause some questions when I had visitors. The main places would be the head on the bathroom door, and the rib cage on top of the fridge.
Anyway, these guys are hilarious, the things they think are dangerous!

I offered Mitzi a small square piece of toast with peanut butter on last night and she was frightened of it and backed away. I couldn't believe the way she reacted. I then covered the peanut butter with another piece of toast and she took it then. Peanut butter is obviously terrifying!
