I have a bird bath in the garden. The wild birds use it a lot for bathing and for drinking. It is 14 inches in diameter. Yesterday there three Wood Pigeons sitting on the edge of it facing inwards and having some sort of a stand off. Eventually one flew off and the other two were staring at each other. Other birds were arriving wanting to get to the bird bath. A bit later I noticed there was just one Wood Pigeon still there but it wasn't allowing any other birds near. A Collared Dove did land on the bird bath but the Wood Pigeon lunged towards it so it flew off.
This morning there was a Wood Pigeon sitting in the middle of the bird bath, preening.

Looks like they've claimed the bird bath.
My mother-in-law has one in Australia that has an order a usage. The little birds come early and make a big racket. Then larger birds come in, chasing off the smaller ones. Then finally a much larger one comes in and everyone else runs away. The little ones share the best and they all splash around in the bird bath together. But they seem to know their time is limited and come early and move as quickly as possible. It is really fun to see them all interact.

So many different birds have been coming, from the Wood Pigeons, Collared Doves, Rooks, Magpies and Jackdaws to Blackbirds, Thrushes, Chaffinches, Blue Tits, Robins, Goldcrests and today there were some Long Tailed Tits.

It was funny yesterday. There was a Blue Tit and a young Robin in the bird bath facing each other. First one had a splash and then stopped, then the other had a splash and stopped and they alternated like this for while until they both flew off. It was as if one was saying: "This is how you do it" and the other was saying: "No, this is how you do it"

Haha, that is cute. I love seeing those interactions and always wonder what exactly are they thinking!
