Hi I'm new to forum, but not new to birds. I have a 10 year old Timneh and he is a joy. He is in great health. He eats a pelleted diet, veggies, fruit, and nuts. He is acting normally, eating, talking, pooping, etc. The issue is about a month ago he went though a bigger molt than normal. For a few weeks he could not fly hardly at all. He is normally fully flighted and has never been clipped. He is usually an expert flier can go wherever he wants and land on a dime. He has never been a plucker and is not now. It seems related to the fact he lost a lot of large flight feathers and now he cannot generate lift. He is just now starting to try flight again, but cannot get high enough and has less control and has to look for an early place to land.
What could be causing this? Is it just that he needs time to grow these back in and if so how can I help speed the process? My closest avian vet is a 4 hour drive one way and I think this would be very stressful for him, so I'm reluctant unless I have no choice.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
It will be due to the loss of primary flight feathers as these are the ones that provide lift. They don't normally lose so many at once that they can't fly though. Are the lost feathers on both wings or just one? I am wondering if he has banged his wing on something.

Hi they seem to be on both wings, but one wing was more affected than the other. I agree its really unusual.

Welcome to the forum.
When I bought Chyloe at 3 months old, she was fully feathered. After her first moult, she was unable to grow flight feathers on her left wing. One or two come in and fall out. As a result, she has never been able to fly. She is now 10 years old and isn't bothered by the fact that she can't fly.
Hopefully, your bird will grow the missing feathers. If he doesn't, he will still have a happy life. Don't worry about it.

I'm hoping he rebounds but yeah I think it bothers me more right now than him, although I can tell he gets frustrated or anxious when he thinks about flying somewhere.

Did he lose the feathers all at once or periodically? Maybe something is going on that they're not growing back in? I do notice that when there is fireworks or thunder mine will drop quite a few feathers. Hopefully they will come back on their own. If not maybe consult a vet.

When Manzi broke 3-4 feathers on one wing, it seemed to take more than a year to fully come back. Because if one grew out that was by itself, it would just break again. They had to slowly grow out next to the rest of the wing feathers for them to stay. Maybe that is happening and it will just take time. Manzi learned to fly before too long, but when in the air, he definitely leaned his body way over to one side because of his lopsided wings.
